Backpacking: What You Need to Bring for Your Trip

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

So, you are planning your backpacking trip overseas? While you may have all your tickets and accommodation booked, chances are you haven't given much thought about what you will be actually taking. Since you will be backpacking, you won't be able to bring everything including the kitchen sink with you. Furthermore, you will be staying in budget accommodation and therefore will need to bring with you items that can make this more comfortable. Here is a list of things that many people have found handy when they go on their backpacking adventure.

1. Ear plugs

You will be sleeping in dorms with 8 people or more. Between people snoring and people coming and going all hours of the night, you will need earplugs so you can get an undisturbed nights rest.

2. Sleep sheet

Not all hostels will provide sheets and some will actually charge you for them. Not only that, some hostel sheets aren't necessarily that clean. Bringing a sleep sheet with you means that you will be able to get some rest without worrying about who slept in the bed last.

3. LED Flashlight

These flashlights are small enough to fit on your keychain but are powerful enough to enable you to use at night to find something in the bottom of your backpack. They are handy pieces of kit and really not that expensive.

4. Padlocks

Backpacks are easy target for thieves - whether it is strangers, cleaners or other people in your dorm. Using padlocks to secure your backpack and its zippers acts as a deterrent for these thieves. While padlocks can be broken open, it does make it a lot more difficult to steal your belongings and hopefully any thief will go after an easier target.

5. Toiletries

Any toiletries you pack should be travel sizes only. That means smaller toothbrushes, razors and toothpaste. If you're a girl who can't live without hair curling irons then take a look at an inexpensive but very effective cordless curling iron. You should also bring along a pair of flip flops to wear in the showers because many hostels can have questionable bathroom hygiene.

6. Hand sanitizer

These handy little bottles of antibacterial cream can help prevent you getting sick from picking up various bugs along on your trip. You don't always have the opportunity to wash you hands with clean water and soap.

7. Global Mobile Phone or Global Phone Card

Whether you need to book ahead for accommodation, call home to let your parents know where you are or just in case for an emergency, a phone card or global mobile phone is an essential thing to bring.
