Bakugan: Characters Fuel a Gaming Revolution

By | Nov 27, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Bakugan is a collector card strategic game that has achieved a high level of popularity. However, it is more than simply a game. It is an entire universe that relies on complex characterization to achieve a believable fantasy action-adventure story that is built up around the game itself. As such, these characters have become quite beloved by those who play the game.

While fans of the series may use the term Bakugan Battle Brawlers to describe themselves, the Brawlers originally referred to the human heroes of the universe. Dan Kuso is the leader of the pack, and is a hot-tempered twelve-year-old. His Guardian Bakugan, Dragonoid, is a fire-breathing dragon that has in many ways become a mascot for the series. Eleven-year-old Marucho serves as Dan's foil, and is the polite and brilliant son of a wealthy family. Furthering the idea that he is sort of an opposite to Dan, his Guardian Bakugan is the water-attributed Preyas.

While he may be a lone wolf, Shun Kazami is an intensely loyal twelve-year-old who was once the top rated player. The air attributed Skyress guards him, and his cold and calculating mind has rocketed him to the top. While he is Dan's best friend, one certainly wouldn't have guessed from the way they behave.

Likewise, Runo Misaki is the object of Dan's affection, but they are usually at odds. This is in spite of the fact that Runo likes Dan just as much as he likes her. Her light-attributed Tigrerra Guardian Bakugan is a predatory tiger that matches her energetic personality.

Julie Makimoto smiles in the face of adversity and is protected by her Guardian Bakugan, the earth-attributed Gorem. Her upbeat personality, therefore, is quite a foil to the near silent Alice Gehabich, who seems to not compete in Bakugan herself. However, she is never seen at the same time as the mysterious Masquerade, and her storyline intertwines with that one.

In a real life Bakugan brawl, one is likely to see attributes of any of these characters. Strategies adopted from the storyline into the game, and vice versa, can give bakugan cards another layer of strategy giving it even more depth than it already has. Of course, that is not to say the series is lacking in any degree of depth either. Leagues of devoted Bakugan fans have latched onto the rich story line, and the future looks bright for the universe of these monsters.
