By Edited Oct 17, 2015 0 0

During your trip to Spain, a visit to the city of Barcelona is absolutely a must! If you are also planning to see the region around Barcelona, then you should definitely look for a Barcelona Car Hire.

After visiting the great touristic attractions in the city, like La Rambla, La Sagrada Familia, the stadium of FC Barcelona or Parc Park Güell, a rental car also enables you to drive to the coast, other than the beaches in Barcelona, and head inland to the beautiful mountains.

There is a lot to do in the region around Barcelona and often it only takes a short drive to arrive at your destination. The active tourist can for instance visit Àger and go paragliding, but you can also pay a visit to the sleepy fishing village of Cadaques and relax. Wine lovers definitely should not miss the Penedes wine region. The world famous Cava, the Spanish alternative to Champagne is from this area. The Barcelona region also has a lot of beautiful historic towns that you can visit while you are driving around.

What you should not miss when you rent a car in Barcelona, is the breathtaking Dali Museum in the town of Figueres.

All known car hire companies, like Hertz, Avis and Europcar are present in Barcelona and these companies have offices at Barcelona airport, Girona airport, the center of Barcelona and the Sants Railway Station (Estacio Sants).

At most car hire companies in Barcelona American Express, Diners Club, Euro Card, Master Card and Visa credit cards are accepted.

Barcelona Car Hire Requirements

To hire a car in Barcelona, you need to be at least 21 years old and, of course, have a driver's license and have held that for at least a year. The minimum driver age can vary, according to the car group. At most Barcelona Car Hire companies a young driver (drivers under 25 years old) pays a specific charge, called the Young Driver Surcharge.

If you are visiting Barcelona from outside the European Union and want to hire a car, then you will need an International Driving Licence (International Driving Permit) and it must have one page of information in Spanish. Drivers from the United States can obtain an International Driving Permit at a local office or at the American Automobile Association (AAA) or National Auto Club.

Car hire at Barcelona airport

You will find the car hire companies at Barcelona airport in both terminal 1 and 2, offering rental cars at competitive prices. It takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to drive from the airport to the city center of Barcelona, depending on the time of the day.

Car hire at Girona airport

You will also find at Girona airport a lot of options to rent a car and the companies at this airport also offer rental cars at competitive prices. The road system around Girona airport is excellent. It takes around 30 minutes to drive from Girona to the beaches of the Costa Brave and it will take you around 80 minutes to drive from Girona airport to the city center of Barcelona.

Car Hire Online offers

You can of course visit the car hire companies in Barcelona to find a good deal, but it often pays to research the internet in advance, since a lot of companies also offer attractive online promotions if you book your car via the internet in advance.
