The black bass species have been the target of many north American sport fisherman for decades. Due to their scrappy nature, and willingness to hit a wide variety of fishing lures and baits, many anglers would say the largemouth bass and to a lesser degree the smallmouth bass are the most popular game fish in america. However, just because these sport fish species are popular does not mean they are easy to cacth. It can actually be quite the opposite. But this shouldn't discourage you, as there are a few helpful bass fishing tips that can get any new angler on their way.

What are Bass?

The sport fish more commonly known ass "bass" are actually members of the sunfish family, along with other fish such as bluegill and crappie. Black bass are characterized by a general torpedo shape, with an almost universal light to dark green base coloring. The largemouth bass is the largest of the black bass species, followed by the smallmouth, spotted, and other more rare species filling out the other sizes. All bass are highly predatory, feeding on a wide variety of aquatic organisms.

Bass Fishing Tackle

When it comes to fishing gear for bass, there are literally as many ways to catch them as there are fish, so it can be a little difficult to choose what tackle is right for you. In general, most people after largemouth bass will suggest a medium to heavy action fishing rod, with either a baitcasting or spinning reel (most largemouth anglers prefer baitcasting reels), and up to 20ib test mono or some kind of super line. For smallmouth and spotted bass, many anglers lean more toward a medium or medium light spinning outfit with only 6 to 10ib test fishing line. These are just general suggestions however, as many factors go in choosing the proper equipment such as general fish size, cover, water clarity, and lure or bait size. Don't be afraid to ask your local tackle dealer for suggestions. Remember, choosing the right fishing gear for bass is extremely important to fishing success!

Bass Fishing Tips

After the bass fishing tackle has been selected, it's time to consider how it will be implemented. Here are some tips on how to catch the wily and powerful black bass:

  • One of the best fishing tips for largemouth bass is to know what they are feeding on in your local fishery. Many man made lakes and ponds feature ecosystems where bass eat more immature sunfish such as bluegill than minnows or other forage items. When looking for large bass in these fisheries, a lure that closely resebles a small sunfish would be ideal, instead of just a general minnow representation. Knowledge of a bass' natural diet is key to a successful day on the water.
  • Have you ever tried wading before? Wading is the act of walking into small streams and rivers, either in waders or "wet wading". Waders are designed to keep the fisherman dry, usually up to the middle of the chest, in small streams. Wet wading is actually getting wet, say in a pair of swim shorts, while you fish. Many of the best smallmouth bass fisheries can be found in small rivers and streams, and sometimes wading can be the only way to reach them!
  • No matter where or how you are bass fishing, it's always important to periodically check your fishing equipment. Make sure to check your fishing line for knots or abrasions which could lead to a lost fish from a broken line. Also make sure your rod guides remain smooth and strait, as prolonged use or heavy strain can sometimes bend them.
