Bathroom Sink Choices for Your Bathroom Remodel
So you and your spouse are planning the new bathroom remodel. You have many choices to make, from textures to colors to function. Just remember that the single most used part of your bathroom will probably be the bathroom sink.
You will have many decisions to make with just that single part of the puzzle. Will you go with a pedestal sink or a vanity sink? If you go with a pedestal sink will you go with standard vitreous china or will you go more modern with glass-encased copper? If you go with a vanity sink, will you go with an undermount sink or a top-mount sink? Perhaps you prefer a solid piece where the basin is carved from the same single piece used for the vanity top.
Pedestal sinks provide a bolder fashion statement. You are provided with both the basin as well as the stem to make a statement with color, texture and design. But most people seem to prefer vanity sinks these days. Vanities enable you to have more elbow room to due your bathroom sink rituals. Often time, modern bathroom vanities also include extensive drawers for storage and organization.
But even if you choose a bathroom vanity sink, you still have many choices to make. Traditionally, a hole was cut into the vanity and the sink bowl was dropped into that hole, with a lip of the sink sitting around the outside and on top of the vanity. However, these days many people are opting to go with either an undermount sink or solid single piece vanity and sink.
An undermount bathroom sink may require more effort to install as the sink is held in place from beneath, but they provide a flat and smooth surface all around the sink, perfectly aligned with the vanity surface.
Going a step further in this direction, solid piece bathroom vanity sinks basically feature the bowl carved into the same piece of material as the vanity. Glass or marble are often the chosen materials for such solid sinks. These are becoming more and more popular as a single piece keeps you from having any difficult creases to clean or maintain.
Yet another choice is to go with some kind of vessel design, such as a copper vessel sink. These sinks feature an almost free standing vessel placed atop the vanity area. In some ways, these combine the space and functionality of a vanity sink with the bolder visual statement of a pedestal sink.
No matter what choice you make, try to keep in mind your overall bathroom aesthetic and functionality. Copper sinks, for example, can be distinct and beautiful, but they really require distinct overall bathroom design.
