Bathroom Sinks: A Critical Choice In Your Bathroom Remodel
When you begin your bathroom remodeling, one of the most important choices you'll make will be which of the many different styles of bathroom sinks you choose to place in your new bathrooms. Will you go with something streamlined and minimal or something large and feature-rich?
Vanity Bathroom Sinks vs. Pedestal Bathroom Sinks
Most people opt for a vanity-style bathroom sink design, and for good reason. Bathroom vanities provide you a large space for people in your home to groom themselves and get ready in the morning or before bed. They often also provide ample storage for your various bathroom toiletries from your toothpase and contact lens cleaner to those extra rolls of toilet paper.
Vanity sinks also provide a large canvas to set a look and fashion for your bathroom remodel. Remodeling a bathroom takes a deliberate sense of composition and your bathroom sink will often be the focal point of the room. With the surface space of a vanity, the material you choose will make a strong statement as to what color and style this bathroom will features. A broad marble surface will convey a strong contrast to a bathroom with a pedestal vessel at its center.
On the opposite end of that spectrum is a pedestal sink. The pedestal sink lacks the surface area and storage capability of a vanity sink, but it creates its own bold statement with its free-standing sink bowl upon-a-column appearance. A pedestal sink can also squeeze into even the tiniest of bathroom layouts. Thus a pedestal sink makes an excellent choice for powder rooms (bathrooms with just a sink and toilet and no bath or shower).
In the past, selecting a pedestal sink meant you had to go along with a more classic look for your bathroom, but in the last decade a wide spectrum of styles have emerged in pedestal sink design. You now can go ornate and antique or modern and sleek. I've even seen pedestal sinks which contain a light bulb and translucent material, allowing the sink to literally glow: now that's modern.
Undermount Bathroom Sinks or Overmount Bathroom Sinks?
After you have chosen either a vanity with an inset sink bowl or a pedestal sink, you then must decide whether you want an under-mount bathroom sink, an over-mount bathroom sink or a sink design where the vanity and vessel are all one solid piece. If you select a pedestal sink, your choice will usually be made for you as most of those come as single piece designs. If you opt for a vanity design, however, then you will have to select from all three designs.
I personally prefer the solid piece design as it creates a seamless surface from the edge of your vanity through to the center and bottom of your sink bowl. This makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze. However, this does limit the available materials and if you select more luxurious materials you will greatly increase your cost.
An undermount bathroom sink is for more modern designs where you desire a flat, uninterrupted surface from vanity to sink. Over-mount bathroom sinks are the most common bathroom vessel design you'll find and are simply sink bowls you drop into place from above with a lip over and around the edge to set it in place.
I hope this helps you better understand your bathroom sink choices as you embark on your bathroom remodeling project. Good luck and have fun!
