Be A Pro And Bottle Your Whisky The Right Way

By | Jul 19, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

whisky is a popular drink. For private owners its essential to know how to correctly bottle whisky casks. The following article should point those who need it in the right direction. Firstly, a single malt display requires, round clear bottles, stopper cork, white outer cases, wood top preferably varnished. Private owners of whisky distillers would be fine with a black and white label. On the label you would place your name, the distillery from which your cask came from, also the various other details such as the dates, the number of the cask, strength etc. You can always print your own labels but be aware of ink jet computers, the ink could easily run if whisky gets spilled. This will ruin the display and put your hard work to ruins.

The best option for printing your own labels is an ordinary color printer. A normal hogshead cask will likely yield 280 bottles or more, all of which will be at a strength of 60% or so. If the bottling was to be at 40% then an addition of 120 litres of water would be needed. This adds up to a further 170 bottles or more needed to contain the extra volume. The whisky would then need to be chilled in order to keep its brightness and clarity. Reductions in strength can cause the whisky to become cloudy. If you chill it you impair the flavor, it therefore avoids the fine malt scotch purveyors and others.

There are many ways for defraying some of the many costs involved in whisky distillers. A good option it Syndicates. If you choose this then closely select family or friends. You want to select people who know the business and the process involved, but also people you can trust. Once that is done you will see the cost will be greatly decreased. However this also means there will be quite a reduction in the amount of whisky. This should not be an issue as it could take 5 years or so to complete one cask, and this is at a bottle a week. There is also the option of a private syndicate. In this case there will be no selling or buying. It also does not require a registration with Customs & Excise.

When it comes to your storage depot there are numerous options to look into. A bonded warehouse is an excellent suggestion. Preferably one of a large size that you can get to in a short period of time. A local option is always the best plan for whisky distillers. Just make sure that they are satisfied with supporting a private owner, discuss all your details with them. Your whisky can then be stored under bond. Most likely you could be charged money per case every week for bonded. This is not always the case however, so be sure to get the confirmation from your chosen warehouse before you make the deal. Both of you should be pleased.
