Be Informed About Menopause

Due to estrogen and progesterone levels changing, the body experiences a lot of different symptoms. Some women have bigger problems, while some others go through this transitional time easily, experiencing very mild symptoms.

The most common signs of menopause are:

A change in period and menstrual cycle is quite common. Regular periods becomes erratic with more or less bleeding. Bleeding during periods starts to vary during menopause. Each women is unique, but you might have extra heavy or extra light blood flow and periods may come closer together with spotting in between.

By far, the most prevalent menopause symptom is hot flashes. Hot flashes demonstrate with a sudden heat sweeping over the upper part of the body and redness in the face and neck. You may also get hot flashes while trying to get to sleep and these are referred to as night sweats. Both hot flashes and night sweats vary in intensity among women, in most instances they only last a few years.

Some women also have urinary tract infections, difficulty holding urine and a more frequent need to go to the rest room.

Another very common symptom is vaginal dryness, and sex can feel unpleasant. Signs of menopause can also include changes in sex drive and desire; many women have a sudden loss of libido. In some instances though, some women feel freer since getting pregnant is no longer a problem and become more sexually active. However, women are advised to still use condoms because menopause doesn't offer them protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

Emotional ups and downs are very common and so is feeling run down. The sudden mood swings are because of hormone levels changing. Women in menopause also tend to get easily exhausted, sometimes having major fatigue. Many women report feeling exhausted even though they are trying to get eight hours of sleep a night, because sometimes their sleep is interrupted by night sweats.

An additional sign of menopause is changes in weight; in some instances the midsection becomes thicker, while fat levels tend to increase. Skin begins to lose some of its elasticity. You will have to work a little harder at staying fit as the body's metabolism changes a little, it becomes harder to lose weight.

It's not uncommon to get heart palpitations or other unusual heart rhythms during menopause, this is usually not an indication of other health problems and with time, they usually pass. In some cases though these signs may mimic symptoms of other diseases and conditions, therefore you should always consult with an expert to avoid complications and additional problems.

Menopause varies from woman to woman. One thing to consider is that menopause has been experienced by millions of women throughout history and, if you can try to manage your symptoms, you too will survive if you can keep a sense of humor about it. Without a doubt, women going through menopause need to take more time out for themselves. It's important to make sure your body is getting the sleep it needs, plus your body is already under a lot of hormonal stress, so you need to reduce your daily stress to make your mood changes more manageable. And, as always, exercise is important in menopausal women, weight bearing exercises help promote better bone density and works to reduce stress and increase better overall health.
