Be Mine Valentine Cookies

Tell your sweetie that you care with a batch of "Be Mine" Valentine cookies presented in a heartwarming bag. The cute cookies, that resemble conversation heart candies, say it all with style. The fanciful gift sack offers a window to the heart with its lace and doily trimmings.

To make "Be Mine" Valentine Cookies you'll need;
For the cookies;
3/4-cup butter, softened
1-cup sifted confectioners sugar
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
1-teaspoon butter flavoring
2-1/2-cups all-purpose flour
1/4-teaspoon salt

For icing;
1-cup sifted confectioners sugar
1-tablespoon butter, softened
1/2 tablespoon vegetable shortening
2-teaspoons milk
1/4-teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4-teaspoon butter flavoring
1-1/4-teaspoons liquid red food coloring

Step 1 for cookies...Cream butter and confectioners sugar in a large bowl until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla and butter flavoring, beat until smooth. In a medium bowl, combine flour and salt. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, stir until well blended. Divide dough into thirds, tint pink, light green and yellow. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill 1 hour.

Step 2 for cookies...preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll out one third fo dough to 1/4-inch thick. Use a 3-inch wide heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Transfer to a greased baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Transfer to cooling rack. Repeat with remaining dough.

To make icing;
Combine confectioners sugar, butter, shortening, milk, vanilla and butter flavoring in a small bowl. Beat until smooth. Stir in food coloring. Spoon icing into a pastry bag fitted with a small round tip. Pipe valentine message onto cookies. Allow icing to harden. Store in air tight container.
Makes 2-dozen cookies.

To make the sweetheart gift bag;
You'll need a medium sized bag, 6 inches of clear cellophane, colored paper for tag, 3 lace heart shaped appliques, about 1-3/4 inch each. 20 inches of 3/8 inch wide lace trim, 3/4 yard of 2-1/2 inch flat lace, 3/4 yard each of assorted ribbons, candy conversation hearts, tracing paper, craft knife and small cutting mat or folded newspaper, a hole punch, craft glue and a hot glue gun.

Step 1..Trace heart pattern onto tracing paper and cut out. Use a pencil to draw around pattern at the center of the bag. Place the cutting mat inside front og bag and use a craft knife to cut out heart along lines.
Step 2...Center cellophane square over heart opening on inside of bag, use craft glue to glue in place.
Step 3...Beginning at bottom point of heart and mitering lace at center top of heart, hot glue 3/8 in wide lace trim to bag along edges of heart.
Step 4..Hot glue 2 heat appliques and several candy hearts to bag.
Step 5...Tie 2-1/2 inch wide lace into a bow, trim ends. Hot glue bow to bag. Tie ribbon lengths together into a bow, trim ends and hot glue to lace bow.
Step 6...For tag, glue remaining heart applique to paper. Cutting close to edges of applique, cut applique from paper. Hot glue 1 candy heart to center of tag. Punch a hole in top of tag. Thread tag onto 1 of the ribbon streamers. Knot streamer behind tag.
