Beating Acid Reflux the Natural Way

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 3 3

Despite what doctors may say, acid reflux is curable in a natural way without medication. Medication can only complicate the natural process in your body and the way it functions. By realizing and understanding why you have acid reflux, you can understand what you need to do to change it. Here are basic ways that you can live without medication and without the pain and suffering of digestion problems due to acid reflux caused by poor eating habits.

Papaya pills

Indigestion problems can cause a number of symptoms including heartburn, bloating, gas, chest pain, burning in throat, sore throat, nausea, upset stomach, bitter taste in the mouth and irritated gums.

Papaya is a natural enzyme that helps you digest your food. You can eat it fresh or buy natural papaya pills in health food stores. You should eat papaya before meals in order to help with digestion.

Aloe Vera will soothe your digestive system and heal the damage that the acid reflux has done to irritate it. Aloe can be put in all your drinks but you only need to put 1 or 2 ounces at a time. In a week or two you will see a huge difference.

If you really want to get rid of it for good and mean business about it, you will need the change what you eat, when you eat and how you eat.

Chewing gum after meals will help you digest your food better. This is because it will increase your saliva which will naturally help you digest your food better. Drinking at your meal is not a good idea. This will water down your saliva and therefore make it harder to digest.Chewing gum at night before bed is also recommended to help with good digestion before sleep.

Eating very low acidic foods is important. These are the types of foods that will most likely give you the problems. Foods high in fat and spicy are some of the most obvious. French fries and burgers would come to mind first as well as spaghetti and meatballs because of the sauce. Even mustard and ketchup can be culprits in causing the affects of acid reflux. There are also lots of vegetables and fruits that are on the list that you should stay away from though. Fruits like, oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are acidic in nature and will not be much help when trying to reverse the situation. It is best to keep the diet as bland as possible without gravies or creams or anything spicy. It is best to stay away from any drinks with caffeine as well as juices with high acidity. Water is the best thing for help in the healing process.

Another thing to consider is that not everyone will have the same reaction to all foods and some may bother you or may not. The best rule to go by is to get your digestive system back to health before you experiment on what you can live with and what you cannot. Once you have things under control, and your digestive track is not inflamed and disrupted, you can experiment a little at a time to see what foods your body can handle in what quantities. In order to keep your body up to par and not regress, you will have to learn to eat in a way as not to aggravate your acid reflux. Occasionally, you can eat things that go against the grain but for the most part, stick to the diet and healthy lifestyle and you will feel so much better.

Eating your food slowly is most important. If you are a fast eater, than you will have to retrain yourself as this is one more reason why you may have this digestive problem. You should try putting your fork down while you are chewing (no drinking) and taking your time to enjoy your meal. Never if at all possible eat after 6 PM.

Raising your bed 4 inches off the floor at the head of your bed will make a big difference as well. This will help relieve your symptoms because when you lay down at night is when you may have the most trouble. Keeping your upper body elevated is a big help for acid reflux sufferers.

Last of all, losing weight, even if you have just a few pounds to lose will help you feel better. Carrying around extra weight when you have digestive problems just makes the symptoms more intense. Just changing your diet in order to heal your digestive system may be enough to kill two birds with one stone.
