Beating Marijuana and Opiate Addiction

By | Jul 20, 2009 | 1 Comments | Rating: 1

A long time ago, the only real gateway drug that introduced teenagers and kids to the world of addiction was alcohol. But then a few decades ago there was a shift and Marijuana became the new popular drug of choice among young people. But even today this trend has shifted yet again, and now prescription painkillers such as Vicodin or Percocet are even more popular than Marijuana and alcohol as the new way for kids to be introduced to drugs.

The reason this is happening is not real clear, but certainly availability has a lot to do with it. Marijuana addiction has given way to other types of prescription addictions, such as Vicodin or Percocet addiction. Kids are finding prescription opiates in their homes and trying them out. It is very difficult to get a clear message to kids about the dangers of experimenting with these drugs, because of course there is still a tremendous amount of peer pressure involved. In addition to this, kids know that the pills must be relatively safe because their parents are obviously using them.

If you do find out that a friend or family member is experimenting with these types of drugs, then you should look into trying to help them without being overly confrontational about it. This will be difficult because most people will get pretty defensive if you suggest that they have some sort of problem, especially if they are not experiencing heavy consequences from their using yet. Denial runs very deep and if people are not getting into big trouble just yet then they are not likely going to see a need to get help for their addiction.

fair comments but does not say anything about how to beat an addiction. I think you will also find that tobacco is the real gateway drug for the vast majority of kids.
