One of the best choices for accentuating your existing fireplace is glass doors.  Glass doors are not only lovely to look at, but they can also help to keep your hot air from finding its way out via the chimney, making them an energy-efficient upgrade.  These types of doors are invariably easy to clean and keep clean. They can bring a very contemporary and modern look to your fireplace area and whole room.  Further, glass doors on the fireplace help make the fireplace safer to use when you have a fire going.  You will find that there are a wide variety of glass doors to select from when shopping, which makes it a cinch to add the right touch to your room.  If you have been thinking about installing glass doors on your existing fireplace, the tips that follow will help you do the job right!

Selecting

When you are shopping for your glass doors for the fireplace, you will be surprised at the number of price points you are presented with.  There are many different features that will factor into the price of your doors, like the materials that are used in constructing them.  For instance, while solid brass is a very durable and beautiful material, it is naturally more expensive than a material like anodized aluminum.  If glass doors have a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty, they are also more expensive than doors with a limited warranty.  If you have a large fireplace or one that is unusually shaped, you may need to purchase customized doors for it, which will definitely run up the cost.  When selecting doors for your fireplace, go for beauty and serviceability, not always opting for the least expensive!  Remember, the heat saved by glass fireplace doors will pay for the doors themselves over time, so you can afford a bit of a splurge when making your selection.

Installing

If you buy a brand new fireplace, there is a good chance that it will be outfitted with a set of glass doors.  For an existing fireplace, it is definitely possible to retrofit the fireplace with doors.  If the fireplace is a standard size, you may be able to find doors that are the specific dimensions that your fireplace requires.  You can also order custom sized doors.  Installation of glass fireplace doors is somewhat simple, particularly if your firebox is made from brick.  Any door that you purchase will come with manufacturer’s instructions for installation, so follow these to a tee in order to achieve the perfect installation.  Typically, you will need to fit the door into your fireplace’s firebox.  Be careful during installation that you do not scratch the doors’ surfaces.  When you have the door in place, mark your spots for drilling using a felt-tip marker.  Once your doors are mounted, be sure to apply fiberglass insulation into the correct channels along the back of your door and then screw them into place.

A fireplace is a beautiful focal point and your new glass doors will add to its style and function. Now add the perfect finishing touch above the mantel by hanging metal dragonfly wall decor, framed art or a contemporary birds metal wall art.
