Bed Bug Treatment

Before performing a bed bug treatment, you must first make sure it is actually bed bugs that have infested your home. Bed bugs, contrary to popular belief, are visible to the human eye. They are full grown about 4 millimeters long and 2 millimeters in width. If you see a bed bug when cleaning a closet or turning over a mattress, immediately vacuum the bug up and depose of it immediately. A single female bedbug can lay enough eggs that, within weeks, you have a whole house infestation. Other symptoms of bed bugs are unexplained wheels or bumps formed upon the skin.

Bed bugs attack at night and go back to their hiding spaces at night. In order to treat bed bugs, you must first find where they are hiding. Common areas are dark warm spots and inside the cover of outlets is quite common. They can also live behind the cracks of molding or floor grates. Bed bug treatment should begin in the bedroom where they are suspected of being.

If possible, remove all objects from the room. If there are rips in the mattress or box spring, it will need to be thrown out or a bedbugs mattress cover will need to be purchased to keep the bugs in or out. If the bedroom is carpeted a steam cleaner will be needed to clean the carpet. Bed bugs will die at 113 degrees, so make sure the steam out put is at least this high. After treating the carpets, clean any furniture that has cushions. The next step is to clean the hard surfaces.

There are many commercial bed bug sprays that are available. Be sure to apply this to every last space and crack. Fill any cracks in the walls with caulking. Be sure to wash all of your clothes in warm water and then keep them in plastic bags as you do not want to spread the bed bugs to other areas. Another option to the cleaning is if you live in a cool enough climate, you can actually treat bed bugs with cold air.

Bed bugs cannot live below freezing and letting the house sit open for a couple weeks will kill every last bed bug. As that treatment is not normally an option, it is always a great idea to consult with a bedbugs exterminator as they all the bed bugs signs and can give you insight on the best course of action, even if you do not hire them.

If you have found bedbugs in your home, it is nothing to be ashamed of. It is actually quite common for the pests to infest even the cleanest of houses. They are actually causing quite the epidemic in northern states where it is said one in a hundred homes are now infected. Bed bugs in hotels are now becoming more and more common. While bedbug treatment is quite difficult, it can be done with a little knowledge and hard work.
