Bed Wedge Pillow Reviews and Recommendations

By Edited Jun 30, 2015 0 1

There are many reasons to buy bed wedge pillows. While they are most commonly used to treat GERD and acid reflux, they have additional benefits as well, such as reducing snoring. A bed wedge pillow is a great non-invasive and affordable treatment for these problems. They may reduce your reliance on medication and allow you to get a full night's rest. There are several on the market that range in cost from $30-$80. It is important to know why you are getting one of these and what you should look for. Will the cheapest bed wedge pillow meet your needs or do you need a premium model?

Good for GERD and Acid Reflux

GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is more commonly known as acid reflux. This is a chronic condition in which enzyme pepsin, acid, and other liquid from the stomach goes up into the esophagus. In addition to being unpleasant, it can lead to further irritation and injury to the esophagus.

Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. If you suffer from reoccurring heartburn, which usually feels like a painful burning sensation or sharp pressure in the chest, you probably have GERD. When you are standing, you are less likely to suffer from acid reflux since gravity helps to keep the fluid in the stomach. But once you lie down it can become a problem. Some people choose to sleep in recliners to avoid the acid reflux. Others will invest in a bed wedge pillow. With these your upper body is slanted enough that the liquid will have a hard to regurgitating into the esophagus. Bed wedge pillows are good for acid reflux because they can be used safely along with any OTC pills or medications that your doctor prescribes.

Can Help Reduce Snoring

While the main health benefit of a bed wedge pillow is that it reduces GERD and acid reflux, it might also help to reduce snoring. Laying like this can help clear obstructed breathing passages which will help you sleep at night and snore less. So people who suffer from sleep apnea may benefit from buying this kind of pillow. You can get a general wedge pillow or look for one that is specifically designed as an anti-snoring pillow.

Alleviates Leg and Knee Pain

While the previous ailments can benefit from a bed wedge pillow for the upper body, one can be bought for the legs which can help reduce pain in the legs and the knees. Many cases of leg pain are due to poor circulation of the blood. These wedge pillows can improve blood circulation and thus reduce pain. In some cases of knee pain these can also be helpful, but since knee pain can have so many possible causes you should talk to your doctor before using one to see if it is recommended. People who have had knee replacement surgery should be extra careful.

MedSlant Bed Wedge Pillow

The MedSlant bed wedge pillow is one of the most popular models. It is also one of the more expensive ones on the market, with a list price of over $100. Fortunately, you can get it for cheaper than this from online retailers such as Amazon.

It isn't the perfect product, but it is well-liked by most of its customers. With over sixty reviews on Amazon it maintains a four star rating out of five. It is 32 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 7 inches high. This is the size that most doctor's recommend. The cover has a zipper so it can be easily removed and washed. It also comes with an extra pillow case. It does fold up and come with its own zippered handled case for travel. This makes it fairly convenient to take with you if you travel.

Most people find that it reduces or even eliminates night-time attacks of acid reflux and GERD. Some people do have trouble adjusting to sleeping partially elevated, but most people get used to it in a few nights. Most complaints were about the cost of the item and not its efficiency. So, if you can afford it you will probably be happy with it. Also consider how much money you may be saving by not having to take pills or medication at night.

Duro-Med Wedge Pillow

If you are looking for something less expensive than the MedSlant, check out the wedge pillow from Duro-Med. It retails for $50 but can be found for around $30. Its dimensions are 12 inches by 24 inches by 24 inches and can be used for the neck and head or for the legs. It has over 140 customer reviews with an average four star rating.

On the pros side of the Duro-Med is that it seems to work well for most customers. It works well at reducing acid reflux. But several people find this wedge pillow uncomfortable. It is quite hard. That helps it keep its shape, but if you are used to a soft mattress and soft pillows, you will probably hate this and prefer to spend the extra money for the MedSlant. People who prefer sleeping on firm surfaces shouldn't have a problem with this brand.

Jobri Inflatable NoFlux Wedge

In theory, an inflatable wedge pillow sounds like a good idea. Traveling with pillows is hard and people who rely on wedges to keep them free from GERD don't want to spend a night on a normal pillow. So the Jobri Inflatable NoFlux wedge was produced.

It folds up to 10 inches by 10 inches by 1 1/2 inches for travel. A hand pump is included for inflating it. The cotton cover is removable and washable. It costs over $80. It works well for reducing acid reflux, so that isn't the problem with the Jobri. The problem is that it isn't portable enough. Considering that you also have to travel with the hand pump, you are left with something that is rather heavy and bulky. It might be fine for car trips, but airlines have strict weight limits and this could be the thing that puts you over. If it were cheaper it might be worth it, but since it is so expensive you should pass on this and get the MedSlant instead. That folds up and has a travel case so it is just as portable as this inflatable pillow wedge.

Thanks for this info. Is there any other use for wedge pillows, you know, in the bedroom?
