Beers of Munich - A selection of Wheat Beers

Munich Beer

This article reviews a selection of Wheat Beers (Weiss Bier) from Munich and surrounding areas in Bavaria.

Munich is famous for its Weiss bier (Wheat Beers) which means "white beer" in German. In Munich they are more commonly called Weizenbeer or Hefeweizen. Being in Munich it seemed only right to get through as many Weiss biers as possible, so the next 8 beers are all Weiss biers, starting with number 1 from the Franziskaner brewery.

1. Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier

Type: German Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen)

Brewed by: Paulaner Brewery

Paulaner Weiss

The Paulaner brewery has been making Weiss Beer since the 17th century and is one of the biggest selling Weiss beers in Germany. This stuff is sold everywhere. The beer pours a hazy golden colour with a big white head. Flavor is sweet, yeasty with a hint of banana and citrus. It’s easy to see why this beer is so popular, it is a very refreshing well balanced Weiss Beer and makes for a great summer drink.

Rating 8/10

2.Paulaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel

Type: Dark Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen Dunkel)

Brewed by: Paulaner Brewery

Paulaner Dunkel

This is the Paulaner Dark Wheat Beer. The color is a deep brown, cloudy in color  with a medium to thick head. Dark brown and cloudy in appearance with a thick creamy head. The taste is full bodied with a sweet malty taste. Taste is wheaty with banana and clove flavors coming through. Overall a very good dark Weiss and a good session beer for a colder evening out.

3. Franziskaner Royal Weiss bier

 Type: German Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen)

Brewed by: Franziskaner Brewery

Franziskaner Weiss

Franziskaner is one of Munich’s oldest breweries. Its history dates back to 1363. It also produces some of the best Weiss Beers anywhere in the world (in my opinion). The Royal Weiss Beer is a 2012 special and it was slightly more expensive than the normal Weiss bier at around €4.10 for a 0.5l glass. The beer poured a nice golden cloudy yellow with a big white head. The beer is clean and fruity tasting, with a slight sourness to it. I did enjoy it but wasn’t blown away. I was expecting a little more from it given it was a special brew. Not bad, but fairly unmemorable and given the choice I’d take the next entry on the list the Franziskaner Weiss Dunkel.

Rating 7/10

4. Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel

Type: Dark Wheat Beer (Weiss Beer Dunkel )

Brewed by: Franziskaner Brewery

Franziskaner Dark

After being slightly disappointed by the Franziskaner Royal I moved  the Franziskaner Dark Weiss. Beer pours a dark reddish brown colour with a nice white head. The beer has a much maltier and full bodied taste than the golden Weiss Beers. It has a great balance with hints of citrus and sweetness coming through. Very easy to drink, this is a very well balanced and full bodied beer and at €3.30 for a 0.5l glass it is good value.

 Rating 9/10

5. Schlossbrauerei Au Holledauer Weiss

 Type: German Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen)

Brewed by: Schlossbrauerei Au

Holledaer Weiss

Another German Hefeweizen, the Holledauer Weiss is brewed in the small town of Au in der Hallertau which is situated a few miles north of Munich. The Holledauer Weiss is not as widely available as many of the other Hefeweizen's but it is still fairly easy to find a bar serving it in Munich. At €3.10 for a 0.5l glass, this beer is great value. The beer pours a cloudy yellow color with a medium white head. The Hallertau Weiss was quite fizzy and a little more spicy than some of the other Weiss Beers. Overall an OK beer.

Rating 7/10

6. Erdinger Weiss bier

Type: German Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen)

Brewed by: Erdinger Brewery

Erdinger Weiss

Erdinger Weiss bier is brewed by Erdinger Weissbrau in the German town of Erding just North of Munich. Erdinger is a popular Weiss bier and seems to be available a lot outside of Germany, for some reason I've never really enjoyed it outside of Germany....maybe they keep all of the good stuff for the locals I don't know.

Anyway Erdinger is quite a mainstream Weiss but that’s not to say it is not any good. The beer pours a cloudy pale yellow with a huge white head. The taste is wheaty (strangely enough) with quite notable citrus flavor. It might not have the depth of taste of some of the other German Weiss biers but it is a good beer and very drinkable.

Rating 8/10

7. Franziskaner Hefeweizen Kristal

Type: Filtered Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen Kristal)

Brewed by: Franziskaner Brewery

Franziskaner Kristall

Another Franziskaner Hefeweizen. This time it is the Kristal. This Hefeweizen is filtered so it is a clear golden colour with good carbonation. The taste is clean and very refreshing. The citrus taste is prominent and the beer has a clean dry aftertaste. This is a very refreshing Weiss Beer for a summer’s day, but lacks the body of the other (unfiltered) Franziskaner Weiss Beers. But nevertheless a very drinkable Weiss and great session beer.

Rating 7/10

8. Augustiner Weiss bier

Type: German Wheat Beer (Hefeweizen)

Brewed by: Augustiner Brewery (Augustinerbräu)

Augustiner Weiss

The Augustiner brewery is one of Munich’s brewing giants and one of the most popular German Wheat  Beers for Munich’s drinkers. The Augustiner Weiss bier is very popular in Munich and widely available in the beer gardens and drinking halls. Beer pours a  hazy orange with medium white head that lasts long time. The Aroma is quite strong banana and hay. Finish is slightly sourish and yeasty. Personally this wasn’t the best Weiss Beer I had while in Munich but the locals seem to love it.

Rating 7/10

That concludes this review of Munich Wheat Beers. In my next article I review some more of Munich's beer, this time looking at a selection of Pilsners and Lagers from Munich.
