Belize Real Estate - an Overview
Belize is a small country located in Central America and in recent years has become one of the fastest growing real estate markets in the region. And no wonder - the country boasts affordable housing, a stable government, a vibrant economy and an efficient healthcare system. English is the official language, a big bonus for North Americans in particular.
The country also offers hundreds of square miles of unspoiled rain forest, some of the best diving in the world, the second longest barrier reef in the world after Australia and the largest Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula. It has become a popular destination for adventure travel, but has also managed to retain its relaxed, rather laid-back feel.
Although larger developments are beginning to appear throughout the country, smaller 'boutique' style developments are still more common throughout Belize. One of the most popular areas to buy property is in and around Ambergris Caye, an island just off the coast, which has a distinct Caribbean flavor. Real estate for sale in Placencia, a Peninsula off the mainland boasting a beautiful beach, comes in at a close second.
In Belize in general, homes range in price from around $200,000 to $500,000 dollars, depending on the size and location; of course homes with a desirable beachfront location cost the most. Condos range in price from around $150,000 to around $450,000; again the location largely determines the price.
Although beachfront homes and lots are obviously popular, there are other areas to consider for your home in Belize. The extreme far north and far south of the country are not as popular with tourists; the pace of life is slower and property prices are lower. The country's mountainous and jungle covered interior offers a chance to get away from it all in a home with stunning mountain views.
It's relatively straightforward to buy real estate in Belize; there are no restrictions against overseas citizens owning property, the legal system is based on British law and the Belize dollar is pegged against the US dollar. The country offers a chance to live and enjoy life in one of Central America's most beautiful countries.
