Bench Scales - A Smaller Alternative To The Floor Scale
Floor scales work great for people that have the space to utilize them properly. They're accurate, quick and provide the operator with an easy way to weigh products and merchandise. What if your place of business doesn't have enough room for one of these scales though? After all, even the smallest scale of this nature is about 9 square feet. Luckily for small business owners everywhere, there is the bench scale. This unique item usually sits on a bench or table and provides many of the same features that are found in their larger floor bound counterparts.
Because these units are often used in postal offices and by couriers like Fedex, bench scales are often referred to as shipping scales. They can be used to weigh just about anything. A shipper will use them to weigh letters and small packages while a butcher will use them to weigh ground pork or a bunch of chicken wings. Bench scales are also found in shipping and receiving areas. These areas are often cluttered with incoming and outgoing boxes. The employee working in this area usually doesn't have enough space to house a full on floor scale.
So what are some features that one should look for in a platform bench scale? Well, the first thing you want to do is make sure that the scale is of the digital variety. I'm not sure if they even make analog bench scales anymore, mind you, but it doesn't hurt to double check! You want a scale that has a large LCD screen that's easy to read. Quickness is also an added benefit that's found in scales of a higher quality. Nothing is worse than putting an item onto the surface of the scale and then having to wait a few seconds before the weight shows up on the screen. One nice feature that I like to have on my scales is the ability to display weights in multiple units of measurement. Some customers prefect pounds or ounces while others prefer the metric system with kilograms and grams. Lastly, you should consider the size. If you know that your new scale is pretty much going to stay in one place, you can probably get a fairly large bench scale. If you think that you may have to move the item from time to time, though, consider getting a smaller unit. Compact bench scales are getting more and more popular all the time. Some even run on batteries so you can take them into the field with you. Now that's what I call portable!
