Who doesn't love a great lip gloss? Not only can gloss protect lips from the drying effects of the environment, it adds a pretty natural shine. Not to mention some glosses have that perfect hint of color or flavor that takes the gloss wearing experience to a new level. Speaking of new levels, here's a fun project for budding cosmetologists everywhere. Try making your own lip gloss! That's right, head to the kitchen and whip up a batch of your favorite flavor. With a little know how it's easy. Plus you'll know all the ingredients are safe.

Of course a little Vaseline works just fine. But who wants that on their lips when they can add flavor and make a more moisture rich long-wearing formula?

The basic ingredients for homemade lip gloss are beeswax and petroleum jelly mixed with a few household oils such as olive oil or almond oil, plus the flavoring of your choice. Beeswax can be purchased either online or at many health food stores.

Recipe: Mix two parts petroleum jelly with one part beeswax, then melt them on the stove in a double broiler or in the microwave. You want the heat to melt them enough so that the warmth helps them combine, but you don't want them to start boilingâ€”so watch them closely and do not leave the area during heating. Remove your mixture from the heat and add any flavor you like such as 10-12 drops peppermint, cinnamon, or almond oil. Try adding a few chocolate chips to your mixture during the melting process, then adding the peppermint oil during the cooling process for a chocolate mint flavor and scent. To sweeten your gloss, add a few drops of honey.
