Bergamot Essential Oil Uses

By Edited Apr 1, 2014 0 0

In order to understand the uses of bergamot essential oil it is useful to learn more about the plant itself. This plant and the oil that comes from it are from Italy and used to only for medicinal purposes. It has been said that Columbus brought bergamot plant from the Canary Islands to Italy. The fruit comes from a citrus tree and is much like an orange. The oil comes from the peel when it has been pressed. The oil from the plant can be found in many different brands of perfume because of its pleasant fragrance.

Research of alternative health products have come a very long way in the last few years and there is still more research to be done. None of these health benefits, or the ideas below, have been evaluated or approved by the FDA. The ideas in this article should not be used in place of personal judgment or medical treatment when needed.

There are several different ways that people use bergamot essential oil. In Italy, the first uses were to help with digestive problems and fevers. Because it is antibiotic in nature, many people will ingest pure bergamot oil to help with things ranging from indigestion to urinary tract infection. Bergamot has a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) rating by the FDA so it is considered safe to consume.

People will also use it topically by applying it on different skin conditions such as eczema and acne. When using it on the skin, you need to be careful because If used too much, it can become an irritant. After applying it to the skin, you do need to be careful not to be exposed to intense sunlight or ultraviolet light for at least 12 hours to avoid burning to the skin.

Finally, it is common to diffuse the oil in living areas or office spaces to help calm and uplift the mood. Many people compare the aroma similar to the scent of lemon. Studies have shown that when individuals inhale the vapors from bergamot oil, it helps reduce stress and promote relaxation.

It is important to remember when using essential oils that quality matters. Not all essential oils are created equal. You need to make sure that the oils you use are 100% pure and natural. I would only recommend using quality oils from known and respected brands.
