Sometimes getting away from chain hotels in traditional vacation spots can be a great change of pace. Bed and Breakfast inns offer a different type of relaxation and come with their own charm since they are typically located off the beaten path allowing you to see less traveled parts of the area you are visiting to get an idea of how people really live in the area.

This type of laid back mini-vacation can slow the pace of your life giving you time to enjoy your freedom rather than rushing around to tourist spots.

Yes, you may become acquainted with strangers in the common areas, but you will not be sharing bathrooms with them. They offer privacy, peace and a personal touch not available in most moderately priced hotels since there are only a handful of guests at any given time.

As a bonus, you can get some of the best advice and tips for things to do from people that have lived in the areas all of their lives

And while you might think that hotels offer more security, in reality bed and breakfasts have fewer people coming and going with a smaller staff that is accountable to you. After all, the owners consider their inns their babies and keep an eye on the place at all times, often living on the premises.

These types of getaways tend to cater to couples only, so you should not have to deal with the rowdy family vacation.

Most bed and breakfast homes are reasonably priced but not necessarily cheaper than staying at hotels in an area. However, they offer more value when you add in free phone calls from your room, internet usage, gourmet or cooked-to-order breakfasts and much more personalized service.

With that in mind, here are some suggestions to get away for the weekend.

If you have never experienced a B&B in your life, you should branch out and enjoy a weekend getaway to a remote part of the country. Some of my favorite places to visit are in western North Carolina.

If rural living is not your thing, there are even locations in the heart of major cities like Stonehurst Place  or the historic Swan House in Atlanta, Georgia .

However, bread and breakfast options offer a great value and a personalized service that you will not get in a major chain hotel. Branch out of your comfort zone and take a romantic weekend getaway to an area of the country you enjoy. You might find you like laid back living more than you knew and end up going back year after year.
