Best Books About Navajo Indians

By Edited May 11, 2015 0 0

One of the most fascinating Indian Tribes to study is the Navajo. Everybody knows who the Navajo are, at least by name, but many people do not understand what the history is or what life is like currently for the people. There are many myths and stereotypes that get attributed to Indians. In some cases some of these stereotypes may even be accurate, but things are that was because of Government regulations.

There are over 300,000 members of the Tribe that are officially registered, unfortunately the political pull that the Nation has is very limited. They get a lot more freedoms and rights then they ever had in the past but things are still not the way they should be. I am not here to lecture about how things should be or what we should do in order to let the people do what they need to do. I am here however encouraging you to read more about the People. Here are some of the top books on the culture that I have found very fascinating and interesting to read.

What makes this book unique is that it is from the perspective of a white kid who was the only white kid in his school on the Navajo reservation. He experienced both racism from the Navajos as well as learned to appreciate what they went through. This book neither bashes nor elevates them to a mythical status. This book does provide for a fascinating and very interesting read for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Navajo. You definitely do not have to even be someone is normally interested in reading about Indians to find this book a great read. If you have a book club then I would highly suggest you consider this book for the next time you get to choose which book your book club will read. The book Navajos Wear Nikes: A Reservation Life is a great read.

The book Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII is definitely one of the greatest books ever dealing with Navajo history. This book is one of those very addicting books that you will not want to put down and when you do finish this book, probably in a single sitting because it is that good, you will be sad. The reason you will be sad when you finish this book is because it is such a great book and great books such as this one are seemingly getting rarer in our society.
