The Best Canon Lenses

“What are the best canon lenses?” This is a question that all Canon digital slr camera owners ask at some point. Canon is a top end brand that produces several good lenses, i.e. those that are tough, durable, built to last and capable of capturing stunning images full of bright and vibrant colours that are punchy but still realistic, so there is a lot to choose from.

As to what are the best canon lenses, the answer to this depends entirely on the image you are trying to capture. For example, if you were trying to capture wildlife images or motorsports images using the Canon EFS10mm – 22mm lens would be ridiculous, even though it is an amazing lens that can capture some stunning images. Similarly, if you wanted to capture so wide landscape shots the EF400mm lens would not be suitable.

So, when deciding on the best canon lenses you need to think about the subjects and the genre of photography in the first instance. It doesn’t matter what genre of photography captures your imagination, be it macro and close up, portrait, landscape, seascape, architecture, wildlife or sports and action, canon will make the perfect camera lens for you. So, what are the best canon lenses?

For seascape, architecture and landscape you are going to need a wide angle, or even super wide angle lens that enables you to get as much in the frame as possible. For these images the best canon lenses include the EF16mm- 35mm zoom lens, the EF16mm fish eye lens and the EFS 10mm – 22mm zoom lens, if you shoot a Canon dslr camera with a crop sensor.

For portrait photography the best focal length is 35mm – 70mm so any lens in this range will be suitable. Fast prime lenses, with their wide maximum aperture, are considered best for portraits so look for something like the EF35mm, EF50mm 1.2, EF50mm 1.4 or for the most bang for your buck, the EF50mm f1.8. There are other canon lenses available but many photographers consider these the best and once you will soon see why.

For sports and wildlife photography you are going to want a long tele or zoom lens that will get you up close. Fast super zoom lenses, such as the EF500mm, EF600mm and EF800mm are exceptionally expensive and will set you back a few thousand bucks, which many people cannot justify. Fortunately, there are alternatives such as the awesome EF100mm- 400mm L IS USM or the EF400mm f4, both of which get you close to the action and are still affordable.

“But what about general, walk about lenses?” I hear you cry. Well fear not as Canon makes some awesome general lenses as well. One of the best walkabout lenses are 70mm – 200mm zoom lenses and canon makes a few of these. With a few options available choosing the best canon 70 – 200 lens can be a challenge but ultimately the decision will come down to how big your budget is. The 70 – 200 f2.8L IS USM is the daddy, although it is pricey whilst the cheapest is the 70 – 200 f4. The best value has to go to the 70 – 200 f4L IS USM, since it is full of features and the f4 aperture should suffice in most situations.

It is clear to see that canon makes some awesome lenses for all different types of photography, however before jumping in and making a decision you need to consider the subject, the focal length you desire and of course, how much you have to spend. It is also advisable to read some professional reviews, i.e. those down by photography magazines, read some owner reviews (as these will be honest and let you know what the lens is like to live with long term), and go to your local camera shop and take some test shots with each. Digital slr camera lenses aren’t cheap and you want to get the most for your money and make sure you are choosing the best lens for your needs, so take your time and do some research to ensure you don’t waste your hard earned money on the wrong thing. Whilst there is a market for second hand and used canon lenses you will still make a loss.
