It’s a Wonderful Life. Mr. Capra's finest. See it,  if you haven't.

(2 pts. each)

Who played the little girl in the original version of the movie, Miracle on 34th Street?

At eight years old, the precocious Natalie Wood was awarded the part of Susan Walker in this unforgettable movie. She would continue her career in brilliant fashion with parts in Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story and Splendor in the Grass.

How many ghosts visit Ebenezer Scroogeon Christmas Eve in Charles Dockens’ A Christams Carol?

Did you say three, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come? Not so fast. There are actually FOUR. Don’t forget Jacob Marley, who for some inscrutable reason, chooses to save his old business partner, Scrooge, from an eternity of torment.

What two, internationally famous, singers from completely different musical genres and widely separated generations combined to sing a rendition of The Little Drummer Boy in 1977 on a traditional Christmas special?

Bing Crosby and David Bowie sang a somewhat adapted version of the song. By all accounts, it was a surreal event with both performers unsure of the other’s intent. While a very moving rendition, the back stage story is far more jaded as both Crosby and Bowie were merely trying to expand their appeal to a crossover audience.

Who created the traditional image of Santa as an elderly man in red suit and black boots with white whiskers”

Thomas Nast, a cartoonist from the mid-19th century, who drew upon his German roots to first depict the venerable Santa on the cover of Harper’s Weekly on January 3, 1863.

Get out, hoser. You don’t know? It’s a beer.

The line, “Happy Christmas, your arse. I pray God, it’s our last,” was sung by what hard drinking musician and singer?

No, it’s not Shane MacGowan of the Pogues but his partner in the duet Kirsty MacColl. She was a bit of a drinker but not of Shane’s caliber. Kirsty died a tragic death saving one of her sons from a crazed power boat driver. Shane went on to drink ever greater quantities of booze and is still with us. By the way, he was born on Christmas Day in 1957.

If Santa’s immortal, why did he keep aging until he was old and gray and then never died?

The answers lies in a book, The Adventures of Santa Claus, written by, none other than,  L. Frank Baum, the author if the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. For his magnanimity, he is granted immortality by his childhood guardian, the Master Woodsman of the World, who wishes him to continue his good works.

What was the first song broadcast from outer space?

Jingle Bells by the astronauts of Gemini 6, Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra. On December 19, 1965, they sent a spurious message about an unidentified  satellite in a polar orbit. They then launched into their version of the song using some bells and a harmonica that they had sneaked aboard.

Where were you on December 8, 1980 when the writer of Happy Christmas (War is Over) was murdered by some inconsequential, lunatic in N.Y.C.?
