Best Diets for People with Fibromyalgia

By | Jan 4, 2012 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The best diets for people with fibromyalgia can be next to impossible to find if you are looking for something with consistency. As a fibromite I found that most of the advice contradicted each other. Talk to your doctor to find the best diet for your situation. Here are a few of the things that I've tried that have worked and a few of the things that I've tried that haven't.

Fibromyalgia Diets and Nutrition

One of the biggest changes I've made recently has been adding a green smoothie to my diet. I read a lot of testimonials about people who claimed to have gotten "cured" from fibromyalgia within a matter of days. Unlike most hoaxes that I usually dismiss I tried this one simply because it is affordable and it does make sense. The smoothies can get a little expensive but it's much cheaper than most herbal supplements and other diet alternatives. So am I cured? Unfortunately not and I've been at it for several weeks. I am hoping that this does help me loose a little bit of the weight I've gained with fibromyalgia.

The most important thing that it's done is give me more energy. It hasn't combated my fibro fatigue completely. However, it has made some of my meal prep easier so I have energy for other things besides cooking. It also has given me the little extra energy I needed to get back in an exercise routine. I was a little scared that this would be gross, who wants to drink a liquid salad after all? However, my blender is good enough that it doesn't end up too chalky. It really doesn't taste like a salad at all. It just takes a little bit of getting used to and probably the first time you try it this will be more psychological than anything before you actually get around to tasting it.

One thing I've found with fibromyalgia at least for me is that it's important not to grimace or tense up when eating healthy foods even when they might be gross. This small action results in stressing out my body a little bit and even a little bit is more than I need on days when I'm not feeling great.

Gluten Free Diets

I also tried a gluten free diet because this seemed to be another diet that was really heralded as being a cure. I found that it totally depleted my energy supply and the foods were just too difficult to prepare with fibro fatigue. While it may work for some people it had the exact opposite effect for me.

It's also important that you not beat yourself up if a diet doesn’t work for you. Sure, sticking to a diet can be considered a matter of will power or changing the idea of what tastes good to you. However, the idea of curing fibromyalgia through diet hasn't been medically proven. Some people will tell you it's a cure; but it's not your fault if it doesn't work for you. For me good nutrition always has its place but it hasn't transformed my living with fibromyalgia no matter how much I would like it to.

Now, I just try to eat as healthy as possible. Just like anyone else trying to eat healthy I've cut down on my refined sugar and processed foods. I don't eat anything fried, and I do use green smoothies and lots of veggies. I think anything too drastic just throws off the careful balance that I need when dealing with this disease. What do you think are the best diets for people with fibromyalgia?
