Best Dirt Bikes for Trail Riding

What is the Best Trail Riding Dirt Bike to Get?

When it’s time to take a dirt bike off-road and out on the trail, there are some things that you need to be aware of. Choosing the right bike will make a big difference in your riding experience and overall enjoyment. Here is what you need to know to make the best choice.

Electric vs Gasoline Engines

There are some very nice electric dirt bikes on the market that work well for up to 30 or more minutes, but for heading out on the trail for an extended ride, there is no substitute for a gasoline powered engine, provided you have a way to refuel. The extra rigors of a trail make the consistently powerful gas engine a better choice if you’re going to do most of your riding off-road. However, for shorter rides or especially lighter riders, a rechargeable dirt bike will work very nicely and save you money.

Engine Size for Trail Riding

Most trails are narrow and bumpy, which means that you probably don’t need the biggest engine you can find to have a great ride on your bike. It is unlikely that you would really need the full power of a 200cc or greater engine to cut through the trail. Any bike that will support a rider’s weight is likely to have more than enough umph to get the job done. If you are new to trail riding, an engine less than 200cc is a smart choice both for safety and affordability, especially as you get to know the finer points of riding.

Street Bike vs Trail Bike

To be street legal, a dirt bike needs certain things like mirrors and lights, as well as turn signals. This is the main difference between street-legal dirt bikes and those made for staying off the road. While these additions are nice for driving down a highway, they may get in the way or get broken on the trail. When deciding which type of bike you want, consider where you plan to ride and make the proper choice. If the best option is a trail bike, there are kits that you can add to make a dirt bike street legal.

Powerful Electric Dirt Bike for Trails

If you don’t need the bike to run for hours, a powerful and affordable option is the Razor MX650 Dirt Rocket. This is on the high end of the Razor family of dirt bikes and offers the added size and power that is needed to make the most of off-road riding. The MX650 will easily carry an adult rider up to 220 pounds.

Expect the Razor to move up to 17 miles per hour on level terrain with it’s eager 650-watt engine that is quietly powered by the included rechargeable batteries. With this engine, you can enjoy nature without the excessive noise that comes from gas engines. You can get up to 10 miles of trail covered on a single charge. For comfort, the bike has adjustable riser handlebars, adjustable rear suspension, and an authentic motocross suspension fork in the front.

If you are searching for an electric bike for a younger rider, the smaller models in the Razor line may be better suited for your rider. The MX500 is a bit smaller in size and will carry a rider up to 175 pounds, while the MX350 is the entry-level model built for kids up to 140 pounds.

Gas-Powered Choice for Off Road Riding

If the 10 mile range of the MX650 is not enough, it’s time to step up to a gasoline engine that can work a bit longer. The Apollo 125cc dirt bike is a nice size for trail riding - powerful enough to carry a rider up to 220 pounds, yet not excessive or too costly for what is needed for off-roading.

The Apollo is built to a size that will carry an adult and it’s powerful enough to reach speeds up to 55 miles per hour on the road - more than enough for the trail. It has a 4 stroke single cylinder air cooled engine that delivers over 8 horse power, and a front hand brake with rear foot brake. The bike rides on big 17-inch knobby tires that will make riding on natural terrain a snap.

For added power, Apollo also has a 250-cc Agb-36 model with a higher maximum speed and the strength to carry a rider weighing much more than 220 pounds.
