Best Free Iphone Apps For Kids

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 3

The ultimate guide to the best free iphone apps for kids.

FIRST WORDS: SAMPLER

The simplest kids iphone apps are often the best. FirstWords Sampler introduces letters, words and spelling to kids. You touch a letter tile and move it into the correct place to spell simple words such as 'cat'.

SHAPE BUILDER LITE

I don't know any kid who doesn't enjoy Shape Builder. Featured in the O'Reilly book of "Best iPhone Apps". You move shapes that snap into place on a silhouette puzzle. Cool sound effects and graphics. Buy the paid version for a lot more shapes - it's worth it.

TOZZLE LITE

Another puzzle solver. Kids can drag and drop pieces into the correct slot. Only four puzzles for the free version, but still, it's a fun play

MY FIRST PUZZLES LITE

Beautiful graphics and you simply shake the iPhone to reset the puzzle.

COOKING MAMA LITE

The famous cooking action game, "Cooking Mama" is one of the most original iphone apps for kids around. You can chop vegetables, stir stews, melt butter in a skillet. A great introduction to cooking and the magical science of cooking.

COLOR MEMORY MATCH and GIRAFFE'S MATCHING ZOO

Two classic matching games. Color Memory Match has 3 difficulty levels. Giraffe's Matching Zoo has the cutest graphics and sound effects. Both are better than Jirbo Match which is also free, but it a lot more difficult to play.

MELODY MATCH LITE

A matching game but Melody Match Lite uses music as well as graphics.

SAY FOR KIDS

A version of the Simon electronic game in which you have to follow the sequence played.

FINGERPAINT LITE

The classic paint app for budding artists. Artistic adults love it just as much as kids.

IWRITEWORDS LITE

A very cute iPhone app to teach kids how to write letters (capitals and small letters) and numbers. Fun sound effects.

ABC POCKET PHONICS LETTER SOUNDS AND WRITING

Teaching the basics of reading and writing using sound and animation. Great interactivity.

STORYKIT

A very original iphone app that lets YOU create a storybook for your kids. You write out the text and can add graphics either from your own iphone photo library or by drawing with the the app. You can even add your own sound effects. A fantastically creative and interactive storyboard app.

BABYAPPS: DIAL-A-PHONE

So simple but gets played endlessly in my house. Babyapps: Dial-a-phone is simply a colorful version of the iphone keypad so your baby/child can pretend to make phonecalls just like they see you do the iphone without actually making a call.

FEED ME: PENCILBOT PRESCHOOL

Simple ABC questions with letters, sounds, simple spelling and vocabulary. Ranked one of the 100 essential iphone appls of 2009 by ilounge.com and the iphone Buyers Guide. Ranked in the top 10 of best iphone apps for kids by iphone4kids.net.

KIDS XYLOPHONE

A simple xylophone for teaching music basics.

PBS KIDS PHOTO FACTORY

Use photos from your iphoto library and combine them with pictures of your favorite PBS kids characters. You can change the frame, add decorates and even save and share your creation through email.

KIDS CAN DRIVE

A big driving wheel with buttons for sound effects such as horns, ignition start, turning signals, sirens and more.

There are great iPhone apps for children that are paid, but which are occasionally available for free during promotional windows. It's a good idea to subscribe to an iphone-app web newsletter which will update you when an iphone app is available for free.

Top tip: you might not have an Ipad right now, but you might get one in the future. If you think your children love the iPhone, can you imagine what they would be like on an ipad. So, be sure to download the free ipad apps for kids too now, because you never know when the app creator will put a price on them.

Please note that not all iphone apps mentioned are free in every territory/country and may only be free for limited times.

Introspective
Great Apps for those kids fortunate enough to have an iphone. Also, good tip about adding free Apps now before a price is placed on them.

Thanks Introspective! Yes, I don't have an ipad yet (but it's on my Christmas wishlist!) but I've already started to download useful apps while they are free!!
