When you’re looking for the best metal distortion pedals a plain Jane distortion pedal is just not going to get the job done for you. Thankfully there’s a whole bunch of great distortion pedals on the market that re specifically designed for getting you that great metal sound. These pedals can also help you if you have a less than stellar amplifier and make your amp sound better. Of course a great amplifier will make the pedal sound as best as it can be. In this article we’ll examine some of the metal distortion pedals on the market right now.

Boss Mt-2 Metal Zone

I have been a big fan of Boss and one of the first pedals I owned was the MT-2 Metal Zone I used this pedal to learn Metallica and Motorhead songs back in my early guitar playing days and it worked like a charm.  A paired this with my Jim Dunlop wah wah pedal and it sounded great. Boss pedals are built like tanks and they will take tons of abuse from you. Not that you should throw the thing around the room but it can take quite a bit of punishment during a gig. It has unique dual-gain circuitry and provides super-long sustain. It has a three-band EQ with semi-parametric Mid control. This is one pedal you should try if you like to play metal guitar, it’s a nice sounding piece of equipment.

Boss ML-2 Metal Core

Boss also offers a metal pedal that goes beyond the sound of the Metal Zone and is geared more towards the metal sounds of today’s extreme metal players.  This is the potent and heavy distortion pedal ever created by BOSS. It’s great for playing Nu Metal, Grind Core, Industrial, Hard Core, or any genre that requires needs a really heavy guitar sound. It’s great for detuned guitars and for 7 strings and comes in the same road tough tank-like case.  You’ll take your metal playing to new levels with this pedal and a good amplifier.

Digitech makes some good metal distortion pedals such as the Metal Master. It delivers Digitech's multi-distortion technology for a great variety of distortion types that you can turn into your own combinations. This is a very versatile distortion pedal for metal sounds. Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff Distortion Pedal

This pedal gives you more of a 80s or 90s metal feel. You can get some great tones with this Metal Muff by Elctro-Harmonix. The pedal features top boost which adds bite to the sound. There’s a button to click the top boost on so you can use it to lay down some killer leads with the pedal. They also carry the Electro-Harmonix Micro Metal Muff Distortion Pedal.

Buying a Metal Distortion Pedal

Just remember that a lot of your guitar sound is going to come from your guitar and amplifier too. A guitar designed for metal with some nice humbucking pickups will make these pedals sound even better. Get yourself a good amplifier like a Marshall and check out different brands to work on your sound. Creating great metal sounds is all about experimentation and you’ll probably have many metal distortion pedals in your lifetime. It takes time to find a sound that you’ll be happy with since it’s mostly just trial and error. Try some of the amp modeling software such as AmpliTube Metal for some great metal sounds you can play directly on your computer.
