Looking for a webcam to record HD quality videos?

Logitech Pro C910

Do you need an external HD webcam? Most laptop computers today are equipped with built-in webcams, and standard web cameras sell for very little. On the other hand the last years have seen the advent of high quality and high definition video, both for professional and amateur users. Wouldn't you love to see your family and friends with crystal-clear definition during video calls? Don't you think its time to improve the quality of your Youtube videos, stepping up to 720p or 1080p recordings? Well, it's time to get an external HD webcam! But what should you look for?

The HD market is rather young, and you might get easily confused between 720p, 1080p and other obscure codes. Actually it's all pretty simple. The term HD refers to High Definition, used in reference to the number of pixels used to record and show video content. Different

The most common pixel resolutions available are:

  • 480p is the old VGA standard, with typically 640 pixels for the horizontal lines and 480 pixels for verticals (abbreviated to 640x480) and a 4:3 ratio.

  • 720p is known as HDTV video mode or simply HD, offers 1280x720 pixels which means a 16:9 ratio.

  • 1080i is an interlaced version of the 1920x1080 and is used by some HD television platforms. Its quality can be inferior to 720p for videos of fast moving scenes, for example sport events.

  • 1080p is usually referred to as Full HD or True HD and has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at a 16:9 ratio.

New higher resolution standards are in development and will probably show up in the next future, but right now it is better to look for the 1080p label for all the high definition video recorders and video players that you might want to purchase.

When choosing your HD device you will have to decide how much quality you might need, and take into account both price and quality when making your purchase. Will you use the camera only for video calls? In this case a 720p webcam might be enought. Are you planning to upgrade your video podcast episodes? Do you want to record great HD videos of your cat's adventures and share them with your Facebook friends? On the long term a Full HD product is a wiser choice but again... it all depends on your budget and your needs.

After checking out many reviews and multiple products specs I have reached the conclusion that one of the best choices available on the market today is the amazon's best selling Logitech 1080p Webcam Pro C910. It is one of the latest products to join the market and it offers the quality, sleek design and affordable prices typical of the Logitech brand.

Some interesting feature of this webcam:

  • Full HD 1080p when recording a video with the included software.

  • 720p video calls at 30 frames per second with the included software... and enough upload bandwidth.

  • Quality dual microphones with noise filter for crystal-clear stereo audio.

  • Carl Zeiss optics (a renowned brand for high quality lenses) to capture 10 megapixels photos.

  • Software tools for 1-click video upload to Facebook and Youtube.

  • According to users reviews the webcam is compatible with Linux and Mac (although there might be some issues with the latter).

Many reviewers are very satisfied with the results of this webcam, although some of them point out that the resolution is not really HD. Read the complete specifications and reviews at Amazon. Check the hardware and bandwidth requirements before purchasing this product!
