Best Joyce Chen Wok - Joyce Chen Classic Series 4-Piece Carbon-Steel Wok Set

By | Jan 20, 2012 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

If you are looking for a good stovetop wok for making delicious stir fry and other dishes, the Joyce Chen Classic Series 4-Piece Carbon-Steel Wok Set is an excellent choice. This best selling Joyce Chen wok is the perfect balance between a high quality wok and an affordable price. The wok is designed for use on both electric and gas stovetops.

This set includes many of the same things you get when buying any other wok. In addition to the Joyce Chen wok, which is 14 inches, you get a recipe book, as 12 inch long wood spatula made out of bamboo, and a domed lid for the top of the wok. The actual wok bowl itself is made out of carbon steel, specifically 1-1/2 mm gauge. The handles are made out of birch wood instead of the carbon steel so that you do not burn yourself when handling the wok. The lid of this wok is dome shaped and made out of non-stick steel.

Unlike some of the other stovetop woks, you cannot put the Joyce Chen Classic Series wok in the dishwasher. Instead, you must hand wash it to get it clean. This can result in after dinner clean-up taking a little longer than with other woks.

The Best Wok Set

The Joyce Chen Classic Series heats evenly when you are cooking. Due to its smooth interior design, you need to season your food before using the wok for the best results. Another unique design feature of this wok is that it has a curved cooking surface inside the pan, which is perfect for properly making a stir fry. It also has a narrow bottom and a wide top, which means you do not have to use as much oil as you would for a pan with straight sides. This is perfect for people who are on a diet or are just looking to reduce their oil or fat intake.

If you normally use a regular skillet for making a stir fry, you will notice after using the Joyce Chen Classic Series wok that the wok heats up much quicker than a skillet. Plus, you get a lot more room to work with in the wok than with a skillet. You will also notice that the bamboo spatula included with the wok has kind of an odd shape. But when you use it, you will discover that it is the perfect shape for flipping and turning food in the wok while cooking. Now that I’ve used it, I can’t imagine how I ever cooked without it.

I tested out some other woks before making this purchase and one of the things that was a deciding factor for me is the weight of the wok. A lot of the woks on the market are fairly heavy and I did not want to have to do strength training just to be able to lift my cookware. The Joyce Chen Classic Series wok is one of the more lightweight woks that I have seen which is important to me. It is still thick enough to be sturdy and offer quick, even heating without being too heavy.
