Before we get to deciding on the best laptop for music production, let's firstly concentrate on the factors, features & aspects that make a laptop especially ideal for producing music (rather than a plain ole standard one).

Head right below straight to the TOP FIVE list.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

This is basically the staple point of how well a laptop performs -- the higher the RAM capacity of the laptop, the faster and better it will perform. Generally speaking (depending on the software being used) producing music is quite an "intensive" task for a computer to take on (not as much as gaming but still quite meaty), so this needs to be pretty high in order to deal with the demands you put on the laptop to operate nice & smoothly.

So as said, this should be a first point of consideration when comparing one laptop against another. For 2014, if you are looking for a top end laptop it should be having a minimum of 8 GB RAM.

Laptop Processor

Another fundamental component is the processor that the laptop is running on, the more powerful and up to date it is, the better the laptop will be in terms of speed and efficiency. Therefore, making the whole job of producing music a whole lot easier for you, given that you won't have to be waiting for things to load up. Generally speaking, you will be want to be looking at an Intel Core i7 for 2014, when getting a quality laptop.

Interface & Operating System

Different laptops will have a different look and operating feel to them. The most obvious one is comparing a Macbook Pro with OS X Mavericks to Windows 7 -- and you will know with artists and creators generally (and myself included) much prefer, the way a Mac looks & feels than a computer. Something that you just can't compare with quantitative specs.

From this, you will have different music producing software that is compatible with one over the other. However, these days in 2014 it is much less of an issue than it was 8 odd years ago -- there is plenty of ways to go about getting one program onto one or the other.

In-Built Speaker System

The quality of the speakers might be a factor for you to consider. Although, generally speaking producers usually like to listen to their music through a decent set of headphones (where pretty much every laptop made has an outlet for that). But, still a factor to consider, if you do occasionally want to play some music that you have produced out loud.

Top 5 Laptops for Music Production

#5 Alienware 14

Generally speaking this is a top quality gaming laptop. However, because it is a pro gaming laptop it ticks all the boxes we are looking for in a music production laptop given it has to cope with even greater demands with gaming.

It has a 14 inch screen size (with 1366 by 768 pixels) a 2.4 GHz Core i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM. Moreover. it is fitted with a 750 GB solid state hard drive and runs Windows 7 premium. In all, a top, top quality laptop that's rated at 88%.

#4 ASUS G750

Again, strictly speaking this is another gaming laptop but it boasts some pretty impressive specs given its price tag. It has an Intel Core i7 2.4 GHz processor (with integrated 3.4 GHz turbo) and runs on a 12 GB RAM capacity so you know this machine is pretty darn fast and will be more than capable of dealing with any demands you chuck at it (especially in the line of music producing).

It is running Windows 8.1 and has a top quality graphics compressor a NVIDA GeForce GTX860M with a Ram Size of 2048 mb. A little bit more expensive than the Alienware laptop, but push comes to shove I would say it was worth it, for that extra edge.

#3 HP Pavilion DV7T

This is a preferred model used by some pretty significant professional music producers. Like the others, it is integrated with a quality processor the Intel core i7 and has 8 GB of RAM, both signs of a very decent laptop for producing music. It also comes with a fairly decent graphics card.

However, what separates this model form others is the quality of the integrated speakers, it is said in a comparison test to perform much better with a 'Beats Audio' system than other standard laptops.

#2 Razer Blade 14

This is one of the most premium laptops on the market, hands down is one of the best laptops out there for pretty much anything. Again, considered a gaming laptop for most, but it would make a pretty epic music producing laptop as well. It is installed with i& and has an 8 GB RAM space but has a 256 GB solid state (allowing it to run faster and more efficiently) and can be uploaded with the latest Windows 8.1.

#1 Apple MacBook Pro

Apple laptops are considered the 'industry standard' in music and video editing. And for me, this is the only type of laptop you should realistically be considering for when it comes to produce music to a top professional level. It is not so much the specs of the macbooks that separate it from the others (although they are top notch), it is the way it is all nicely packaged together. Check out a macbook in your local apple store and you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

If you don't get the model featured below, I would advise getting an older version that's a bit cheaper. They really are the best in the business in the laptop world when it comes to music production.
