If you are looking to buy a Lego Star Wars set, the chances are you are either looking to buy it as a gift, or buying it for yourself to add to your collection. If you are a collector of these Lego construction toys based around the popular film series, then you will probably already know exactly which sets you are after.

This article looks at a few of the best sets available based on both value for money and playability.

Star Wars toys have been produced by Lego since 1999. They are the most popular theme of toys within the Lego range. They are available from most large retailers and toy shops, although if you are looking for a bargain, you would be best placed to search the internet. Here is a review of an assortment of smaller sized sets.

Lego Star Wars 9496 Desert Skiff

The Desert Skiff set was released in 2012 and has proved to be very popular. The set comprises of a small skiff vehicle and four Lego mini-figures, as well as the 'Sarlacc Pit'. The set recreates the famous scene in the Return of the Jedi film, where Jabba the Hutt takes Luke Skywalker and Han Solo into the Tattooine desert to be cast into the pit.

The mini-figures themselves are excellent. Included are Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, Kithaba and Lando Calrissian. Boba Fett has been one of the most popular characters with Star Wars fans for generations, and he does not disappoint in Lego form. This representation of Boba is easily the best looking that Lego have so far produced. His inclusion in the set is bound to make this a popular toy. Luke Skywalker has his trusty green lightsaber, and Jedi Knights are always prized by children!

Lando Calrissian is in his skiff guard disguise, again another excellent Lego mini-figure which is bound to please. The fourth figure, Kithaba, is one of Jabba the Hutt's henchmen and really sets the scene nicely.

The actual skiff vehicle itself is quite basic, but is an improvement on the same vehicle that Lego released several years ago. It does everthing it needs to do,  Luke Skywalker can 'walk the plank' and teeter over the edge of the Sarlacc Pit. Lego have made a great job of recreating the pit, with horns and tentacles protruding!

The price of this set ($24.99 recommended retail price), which can usually picked up at a discount online, represents excellent value for money. Combined with its great playability makes this a highly desirable Lego Star Wars toy.

Lego Star Wars 9490 Droid Escape

From one of the first scenes in Star Wars: A New Hope, comes a Lego set representing the escape pod which takes droids C3PO and R2-D2 to Tattooine. This smart little Lego set comprises of four Lego mini-figures and two vehicles.

Starting with the rather great Imperial escape pod, the top half comes off and both droid mini-figures can fit inside! It's designed very nicely and has some minor interior detail, which again is an improvement on a similar set that Lego released several years ago (Lego Star Wars 7106 Droid Escape). Finally Lego fans everywhere can rejoice there is a more detailed C3PO! Previous versions, whilst adequate always seemed a little lacking and were always completely the same colour. Now the protocol droid has different colour neck and stomach detail making him much more realistic looking. The R2-D2 astromech droid, looks to be unchanged from previous sets, although he is always a welcome addition to any collection.

There are two sandtroopers included with this set. These are excellent mini-figures which now include weathering detail, this is bound to make them a hit with children. There are two types of sandtrooper, one with a white pauldron whilst the other is orange. The sandtroopers have a small speeder vehicle, which really helps the playability of the set and is great for Tattooine desert chase scenes! Lego's attention to detail with this set is magnificent.

This set retails at $19.99 and if you can buy it for less, it is a bargain. A brilliant construction toy, both in value for money and playability.

Lego Star Wars 9491 Geonosian Cannon

Now we move back in time to the clone wars or episode II era, with set 9491, Geonosian Cannon. This is a nice little Lego star wars set, and contains four highly collectible mini-figures. Starting with the impressive Clone Commander Gree, a clone trooper commander variant with green detailing on his body armour. This figure makes the set worthwhile buying. Gree is pitted against Jedi Knight Barris Offee, a female Jedi who is represented rather well in a black hood.

The other two mini-figures are geonosian characters. The first is a geonosian warrior, accompanied by a geonosian zombie. Both of these mini-figures have realistic wings. The detail on these two toys is fantastic, it seems the Lego Star Wars range becomes more and more detailed with every passing year. At $19.99 this is a worthwhile buy, if you can find it any cheaper it becomes a real bargain! The cannon itself is a nice design, and above all is quite stable so will stand up reasonably well to being played with.

Again, this set is highly recommended, either as a gift or as an addition to your Lego Star Wars collection.
