London can rightfully be called musical capital of Europe. In the capital of England you can visit over 30 shows and some of them are showing already over 20 years!

This article gives you an overview of the best musicals in London:

Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! is one of the most famous and most popular musicals in London and features the 22 most famous songs of the Swedish band Abba.

During the show, we meet Donna, a mother in her fourties with vague memories of carefree days and nights of the past and her daughter Sophie, who dreams of tradition, romance and a white wedding. Mammia Mia is an entertaining and funny musical, with the audience regularly enthusiastically singing along to the familiar songs of Abba.

This musical can be seen in the Prince of Wales Theatre in Coventry in London's West End, near the famous Leicester Square.


Wicked is one of the most popular musicals in London and is about the friendship of two girls who meet at a school for witches.

After a meeting with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship comes under fire and everyone goes their own way as Glinde The Good and The Wicked Witch of the West.

The London musical has already won numerous awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award 2010 for Most Popular Show and in 2010 and 2011, Wicked won the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best West End Show.

This musical is in London to see at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, Wilton Road, West End in the City of Westminster.

The Lion King

The Lion King is the award-winning musical version of the popular Disney movie, which tells the moving story of the little cub Simba. This musical is very popular because of the beautiful costumes and the music of Elton John, Tim Rice and Lebo M, with hits such as Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel The Love Tonight.

The show is staged at the Lyceum Theatre in Covent Garden, which you can find in central London.

Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot is one of the most celebrated, award winning musicals in London, with music by Elton John. The London musical tells the moving story of a boy who is passionate about ballet and is fighting to prove himself to his skeptics. Billy Elliot is a show full of laughter, life, unforgettable music and astonishing dancing.

This musical is showing in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre, which you can find in Victoria Street.

Les Miserables

Les Miserables is the world famous musical about France in the 19th century, a country in the grip of a revolution.

The musical is famous for its splendid historical costumes and dramatic music. This London musical can be seen in the Queen's Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.

Phantom of the Opera

Phantom of the Opera is the epic and multiple award-winning musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber about  the phantom of the Paris Opera House, who terrorizes the Paris Opera in an attempt to make his protégé Christine the leading lady of the Opera House. The Phantom of the Opera has some of the most outrageous sets, costumes and special effects ever created for theater and is a phenomenon in the musical world.

The Phantom of the Opera can be seen in Her Majesty's Theatre in the Haymarket in London.
