Coffee houses are perfect for a date. It's hard to go wrong when there’s something for everyone: sandwiches, tea, pastries, good vibes, and espresso. It’s not as big of a commitment as dinner and drinks, and casual enough to relax and get to know someone.
Dating coach Ryan Black adds that a coffee date is a great option because it's a fairly low pressure situation.
“A coffee date is a great idea, rather than the expense, formality and possible pressure or expectations that may arise from a sit-down dinner.”
If you live in LA, there are all kinds of coffee houses that can cater to your date, be it your first or your third.
Bricks & Scones
Bricks & Scones is a family-run coffee house with a great atmosphere, and a ‘homey’ feel. It’s not a high traffic, noisy cafe, making it an ample setting for a date. It has an outdoor garden patio, and parking is not a hassle with spots on the street and behind the cafe. They also have a lot to offer the community, like a library and a study, as well as board games you can play while there. Not a bad option if the conversation takes a turn for the worst.

If you like the vibe near Venice, Menotti’s coffee house is right in the heart of it. With a beach-front view, it offers vegan and organic options, outdoor seating, and daily coffee tastings. It has less of a ‘sit all day with a laptop’ vibe, and more of a 'sit and talk' vibe. Since it’s right in the heart of Venice, you can also grab some coffee and walk along the boardwalk, taking in the sights. Sometimes conversation is easier with a cool breeze, and rather than sitting face-to-face.

Located just north of the third street promenade in Santa Monica, Demitasse is another great place for a date meetup. It’s a local coffee house that roasts their own beans, which is great if you’re looking to take your date to some place with a unique taste. It’s also within walking distance of the beach. Their outdoor seating provides a great atmosphere for relaxing and people watching, and there’s always the option of strolling along the promenade.

There are three Coffee Commissarys in the LA area, but their North Fairfax location is what LA Weekly calls ‘simple, casual, and gimmick-free’. They’re known for their strong but delicious, pour-over coffee, and coffee book author Robert Galinsky puts it at the top of his list for an ideal date place because it has an “at-home feel that makes any date both informal and yet has an upscale quality to it.” It’s a great location with good service and a warm, family-friendly vibe, but still maintains a “chic energy”, as Galinsky puts it.

Lamill Coffee Boutique
Lamill Coffee Boutique touts a plush atmosphere with large, comfortable chairs and an outside patio, not to mention rave reviews about the coffee. The interior has been described as ‘instagram-worthy’, the food is excellent, and the staff attentive. It differs from other coffee houses in that you sit at a table and get served by an actual waiter or waitress, versus sitting anywhere and never being bothered. It’s not quite as hipster as other coffee shops in Silverlake and it’s a bit more pricey, but there’s free parking in the back (and street parking if you can find it) which is a big plus. It’s particularly perfect if your date likes a bold cup of coffee.

With five locations all over LA, Urth Caffe is a fan favorite among Angelenos, and provides a great atmosphere for a coffee date. The environment has been described by Yelpers as a ‘European-like cafe’, and many describe it as great place to catch up with friends and family. In addition to the coffee, it has great food. Bring your date here even if they don’t like coffee, there’s plenty of options to choose from.

Balconi has a more intimate atmosphere, with no wi-fi. They are well known for their siphon coffee, and siphon pots decoratively line the countertop when you walk in, like a mini coffee chemistry lab. It’s perfect for a casual date, and the baristas take their time crafting your coffee, leaving you with good opportunities to chat with your date. It has an artsy feel, with not-too-loud music, and an overall elegant atmosphere to get to know someone over an artfully crafted brew.

Groundwork Coffee Company (Hollywood)
Certified organic coffee roaster Groundwork Coffee in Hollywood is perfect for a date because it offers more than just a coffee sit down. It sits in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset and Cahuenga, so after a tasty brew you can browse the The Hollywood Walk of Fame, or peruse the shops and/or restaurants in the surrounding area. They offer Mexican hot chocolate made from scratch, have tasty chai lattes, and an overall unpretentious, local vibe.

Overall, coffee dates are great. They allow you to notice little quirks about your potential soul mate as they order their coffee, like whether they make things difficult for the barista, or if they add simple niceties like ‘please’ or ‘thank you’. It’s also a perfect segue to the next part of the date, because coffee tends to make you hungry. Should we grab a bite to eat after this? Only if the date’s going well, of course.
