As you look for the best shoes for people who walk on their heels in and usual way, you will find there are several options out there to choose from.  However, there are really only a couple of different brands which are likely to be the best for you.  This is because some of the companies are known for putting more money into research and development than advertising, which increases costs and inflates prices.  Take a look at these styles to see which ones work best for you.

Ecco Shoes

You can get them in walking, athletic, or even casual and dress shoes.  They are my favorite and have been for several years now.  They have a very high arch support, which for some odd reason, has helped me with heel dragging, although it definitely hasn’t completely cured it.  I can only assume I unknowingly compensated with other shoes from a lack of arch support until I started wearing these.  Reviews on this brand have typically been quite favorable, but of course, that will vary greatly.  Just take a look at them and see if they will work for you.  You just might find the most comfortable pair of shoes you’ve ever tried on.  As a word of warning from personal experience – don’t assume the arch is too high until you wear them for a while.  I thought that initially, but quickly found they felt great once I got used to them being on my feet.

Vibram Fivefingers

In some cases, people walk on their heels or the side of their feet as a result of wearing shoes, often not walking in the same way when they are barefoot.  For this reason, Vibram Fivefingers shoes are a good option.  These are barefoot or minimalist shoes, however, so they offer very little support.  You should be sure you are only walking awkwardly when wearing footwear before trying these.  In addition, you need to build up your ability to wear them by wearing them for very short periods of time initially and slowly increasing the length of time you wear them.  They are not very expensive, often costing less than $60, but there is a pricing variation, depending on what style you select.

Signs You Walk on Your Heel

There are several ways to tell if you walk on your heels.  Since we really cannot naturally see the backs of our feet as we walk normally, there are some ways to find out if you are one of the people walking on your heels in an awkward manner.

Check the Bottom of Your Shoes:  Take a look at the heel of your shoes and look for signs of uneven wear.  I personally tend to drag my heels.  I’ve been doing it for almost 40 years now and it’s completely unrealistic, at least in my mind that it’s going to magically change.  I can tell I do this not only by the sound I make as I take a step, but by the way my shoe bottom wears out.  Do you walk on the side of your feet?  Do you put too much pressure on the sides of your heels or come down on them funny?  You can tell just by taking a quick look.

Check the Insole:  Take a look at the insole of your shoe.  Remove it and lay it down on a flat surface.  You can generally see if one end is crushed and matted down more than the other and it will let you know how you walk.

Have a Friend Look:  Have someone walk directly behind you, several feet back and watch to see exactly how you are walking.  Better yet, have them video tape it, so you can take a look for yourself.  You might find that you only walk on one the heel of one of your feet and not the other.  You might also find your heel slips out of your shoes with every step, indicating that you might just need to cinch them up.

Possible Corrective Actions

Some of the suggestions listed here are not truly going to stop you from walking on your heels.  They will, however, reduce the problems that can arise from walking on your heels.  It’s actually bad on your joints and feet, so doing what you can to minimize the effects is a good idea.

Buy Appropriate Shoes:  Don’t go getting cheap on yourself now.  I realize budgets are a concern for most people, but if you want to limit the issues you might feel as you get older, spend the money and get a quality pair of shoes.  Ecco brands, in my opinion, have been the very best on the market today.  The high arch support seems to almost force me to walk better.  I cannot explain it quite properly, but it’s definitely something I notice.  Most people, once they start wearing decent footwear, start to notice a big difference in a short time.

Have Your Foot Measured:  It’s possible you are walking on your heels as a result of unconsciously compensating for shoes which are too small, crunching your toes, too narrow, placing pressure on the top and sides of your foot,  or too big, causing your foot to slide around too much.  All of these possible issues are easily fixed when you have your foot measured properly.  Above all else, don’t get hung up on the fact you might have to go up a shoe size. 

Have Special Orthotics Inserts Made:  You can have them tailor made, but you might have to see a podiatrist first.  The good news is, you might be able to get your insurance company to cover one pair per year, possibly two pair, if you have really good health insurance.  This can allow you to walk more normally and reduce the potential health problems you could face from not walking properly.  This is definitely something you will want to look into as you search for solutions.
