Best Speakers for Streaming Music

By Edited May 5, 2016 0 0

Wireless home audio speakers are becoming more popular among homeowners because of their flexibility and portability from room to room. Some models offer the option of linking up together with units in other rooms via your wireless network so that your streaming music will fill each room around the house without moving the device around.

As with all digital music, there is a slight loss in quality but most people cannot tell the difference. However, if you consider yourself an audiophile, you are probably not going to be satisfied with anything less than vinyl on a $10,000 stereo system, so you might want to skip this.

Speakers that stream music wirelessly are ideal for home use because they work with all operating systems of the popular mobile devices.  Not only are they an easy option to setup a home stereo system, but because of their small size, they can be moved anywhere. Some do not even need access to a power outlet because they have rechargeable batteries.

There are two common types of technologies used for streaming: Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay.

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that allows people to connect various devices to other devices. Bluetooth technology is not new. It has been around since 1994.

It can be used for transferring data such as files, photos or music between two phones, tablets of from phones to speakers for use on portable ear pieces of the speakers inside your car.

You can also pair a tablet or smartphone to wireless Bluetooth enabled speakers to stream the music from your phone to the device for audio output or connect wireless keyboards or mice to gaming consoles.  Furthermore, the phone or device you are using can be used to control the volume and selection of  music on the speakers.

What is Apple AirPlay AirPlay?

Similar to Bluetooth, AirPlay is Apple’s proprietary technology that allows you to connect various devices that are enabled for it, typically Apple products like iPhone, iPads and the  iPod Touch. It works in much this same way as Bluetooth. You simply enable it, then locate the device. So if you were streaming from your iPhone, an AirPlay enabled device would “see” the mobile phone, then become an audio outlet for whatever you wanted to play on the phone.

There are other devices besides Apple products that utilize this technology over Bluetooth and some of those will be highlighted later.

What are the Best Choices for Streaming Audio in Your Home?

Bluetooth home audio speakers come in a variety of sizes and prices. Some can be had for around $50, but they are not going to have the volume power or bass as some of the more expensive models. If you are serious about home audio and would like a boom sound throughout several rooms of your home, here are some of the most popular options currently available from least expensive to most expensive.

Conclusion

I recently installed an aftermarket stereo in my car and one of my favorite features of the unit is the Bluetooth feature that enables me to connect with my iPhone and stream music from the Cloud in my Apple account, or via Pandora. It works flawlessly, with no hesitation.

If you want decent sound in your home, but do not want to invest in an elaborate stereo system or box system for one room, a portable, wireless speakers utilizing either Bluetooth or Airplay will provide smooth audio play and a bigger sound that you might imagine.

Obviously some of the more expensive models are going to have better bass and sound through the mid-ranges, however, for most users, models in the $100 - $200 should work fine for listening to music, podcasts or anything throughout your home.
