When buying a treadmill that you intend to use basically for just walking, you want basically three main aspects from it i) firstly for it to be comfortable -- and supportive, reducing the impact on joints (with cushioning technology & suspension deck support etc.), ii) to be durable & solid (like it was built to last) and iii) finally for it to host a range of the important features such as a console that details all the relevant diagnostics (e.g. the distance travelled, speed, incline levels etc.) & offers you a range of work outs.
Below, is a selection of some of the best treadmills that accommodate for just simple old walking -- hopefully you will either come across the perfect model for you that meets all your fitness needs & preferences or (if not) you will at least get a better idea as to what you're after.
The 98510 'Easy-Up' Manual Treadmill By Phoenix
For those who are wanting a simple treadmill that works & are on a limited budget, the 98510 is a really great option. As it is manual (i.e non-electrical), the user themselves powers the treadmill (whether it just be at just a simple walking pace or going full throttle, the treadmill dictates to their speed) - which makes it considerably cheaper. This being said, it still offers you a simple electronic console system (requires 2 x AA batteries) -- detailing your speed, distance travelled, calories burned etc.

Moreover, because it is so compact & can be folded up vertically it is easy to store away, so is pretty practical to have in and around the home (whereas traditional treadmills can be rather space consuming). In truth, there is nothing fancy about this model -- but it does the job & is more than sufficient for those who just intend on walking on the treadmill.
The R 5.2 Treadmill By Weslo
Another decent in that for what it offers -- you are getting a lot of value for your money -- but in the treadmill market is still rather basic (this being said, it will serve your 'walking' needs rather nicely). Fitted with a 2.25 HP motor it will allow you to reach from 0 to 10 mph along with two adjustable incline positions (all easily accessible from the QuickSpeed Control panel). It is also fitted with "comfort cell cushioning" mechanism that acts to protect your joints & reduce impact felt whilst you are working out (accommodating a weight capacity of up to 250 lbs).
At the center piece tis the LCD workout 'matrix' display which reads out all the relevant diagnostics & stats -- displaying it through a "graphical interpretation" (which I rather like, compared to just numbers changing from time to time - down to preference though I guess) as well as offering you 6 work out programs (all revolving around weight loss & fat burn) having being scripted by a 'certified personal trainer'. Again, like the 98510, this R5.2 is quick & easy to store away too. In all, for the low price tag & your exercise purposes -- this treadmill offers a tonne of value and would probably be the one I would personally opt for
The T101-3 Treadmill by Horizon Fitness
This is an award winning treadmill (a Treadmill Doctor's "Best Buy") and provides everything you could want from a treadmill (especially with just walking on it). With a large deck (22" x 55") that is supported with perfectFlex cushioning & fitted shock absorbers within the suspension -- you will be ultra comfortable & brings impact felt on your joints to an absolute minimum (as well as being able to support users tat weigh up to 300 lbs).
Powered through a 2.25 CHP motor - you can access speeds of up to 10 mph, on a incline level as high as 10% -- that constructed & fitted in such a manner that the treadmill is practically silent whilst in operation (especially at lower walking speeds). Furthermore, it is feature rich -- with (COOLfit) fans that direct a nice smooth airflow to keep you feeling refreshed & basically more comfortably as you are working out as well as jack-in ports so you link in your iPod and listen to audiobooks, podcasts & music whilst you are working up a sweat.
The TR 1200i Folding Treadmill By LifeSpan Fitness
This treadmill is my personal favourite -- it is multi award winning (having too won best buy from treadmill doctor as well as receiving "head of class" status from the treadmill professor) & is generally more intended for those who are serious about cardio exercising (like practically every day use). It operates on a 2.5 HP motor that ranges speeds from 0.5 to 11 mph, allowing the deck (20 x 56 inches) to reach an incline level as high as 15%. It is also biomechanically structured with 6 fitted elastomers to act like a cushion mechanism to keep impact on joints to a minimum.
At the centre of the treadmill is its advanced yet so simple to use console that provides you with a range of scripted fitness programs & settings. Moreover, when you buy the TR 1200i, you also are signing up to the LifeSpan fitness club -- which acts to track & record each work out that you have conducted all automatically (like a fitness log), and you get to see the progress you have made online. This is a really great treadmill & if you are interested in getting a top quality model -- this would be the one you should check out.
