Top Rated Stair Way Vacuums
Typically cleaning stairs with a vacuum is difficult, more so when you have pet hair and large amounts of dust and dirt to deal with. However, some vacuum brands & models make the whole chore -- from start to finish -- a great deal easier than others.
Here, we will explore the very best vacuum cleaners out there in the market today -- for when it comes to vacuuming carpeted or hard wood stairs, for when it comes to cleaning pet hair and so on. All the vacuums have been selected on the basis of making life that bit easier but offer themselves as a decent deal too (however, as we are considering the 'best' don't expect too much of a bargain).
What Makes a Good Vacuum for Stairs?
So as you would expect with any quality stair vacuum cleaner -- it needs a powerful motor to quickly and efficiently suck up any debris that you have covering your stair way. However, at the same time you don't want to be dragging up a large heavy machine back and forth the stair way, up and down each step -- as it makes the whole job quite physically stressing and could potentially unbalance both you and the vacuum & I don't think anyone wants to fall down their stairway with a vacuum to follow (could get you down), hence needs to be light, stable and compact.
Moreover, you could do with a range of additional vacuuming cleaning tools to suit. Ideally a specifically designed stair tool itself would be handy, also a crevice tool and brush extension attachments etc. Also, the reach of the vacuum needs to be extensive -- a long telescope stretchy hose can make cleaning stairs a whole lot easier too.
With all that said two immediate ultra powerful vacuums spring to mind.
#1 The brand new Dyson DC65.
So to start it is basically the most powerful vacuum cleaner on the market (possessing 245 AW of constant suction power -- making it twice as effective as any other competing non-Dyson vacuum) so it will have no difficulty at all with quickly and effectively cleaning anything that covers your stair way.
Moreover, it has a long and extensive reach with the telescope hose pipe that stretches almost 16 ft and comes with an arsenal of cleaning attachments such as: the combination tool (which is a crevice tool that doubles up as a powered dust cleaning tool as well), tangle free pet hair turbine attachment (and a whole lot more if you get the Animal complete version) -- and most importantly an actual designated Stair tool.
This can be simply fitted on the end of the telescope hose. So all you have to do is base the DC65 at the bottom of the stair way & clean each step one by one as you go up with the reach pole (as demonstrated in the video below at 0:44)

Also, it ain't too heavy compared to most other competing standard upright vacuums either, weighing just over 17 lbs. Arguably, this is 'the' best vacuum for stairs, however it just comes with a rather hefty price tag too.
It does obviously serve as a fantastic vacuum cleaner all round as well. The DC65 also comes with a 5 year warranty coverage and sophisticated filtration HEPA system to prevent allergens and dust particles from being expelled into the air whilst your vacuuming to maintain a healthy clean air supply in your home (particularly recommended for those who are allergic or asthma sufferers).
#2 Another Dyson -- the DC59, Digital Slim
This model is a slightly different take on what you might be typically thinking a stair vacuum should be as it is cordless. However, it is just any old cordless vacuum, the new Digital Slim Mk.3 is by far the best in the business -- whereby it has undergone a range of improvements and updates to allow it to essentially clean as well as that of some standard corded vacuums (incl. a new cobalt battery, new digital motor and so on). The major advantage of cleaning with the DC59 is that it is incredibly light -- with an ergonomically distributed weight design -- at just over 2 lbs (feels far less) and is obviously free from cords.

Moreover, you can actually turn it into a handheld vacuum cleaner through removing the wand component that joins the cleaner head to the motor handle. This makes it lighter still and for you to get an even more intricate & powerful clean. Also, like the DC65, the DC59 comes with a few extra attachments too, to make cleaning stairs that bit easier such as the mini turbine tool and a specialized combination tool as well. A truly awesome cleaning machine for stairs. Again though, arguably rather pricey.
