The Best Vacuums for Small Apartments & Flats (top five)

By Edited Apr 23, 2015 0 0

If you are interested in getting a decent vacuum cleaner -- but has to be compact & lightweight due to your living space being on the smaller side (i.e a flat or an apartment) & are hence a bit conscious with storage space -- then you are in the right place. Below, you will find a list of five small/compact vacuums that are easy to store away & use, yet are practical and have the capability to perform to a high cleaning standard. In all, this article hopes to help you identify which is the right vacuum for you -- and is best suited to your specific preferences -- and at the least give you a better idea of what you are after.

1. The Dyson DC44 (more info)

As a cordless stick vacuum cleaning machine -- the Dyson Digital Slim (Mark II) would easily be my (personal) first choice (you can check out more Stick type vacuums here) for a whole range of reasons but just to mention a few:

i) for the simple fact that it is cordless & super lightweight (weighing in at just 2.25kg, doubled with the fact that I am not restricted by a cord means it is incredibly easy to manoeuvre -- and can allow me to clean quickly & efficiently) ii) and is also surprisingly powerful (it has a constant cleaning suction power of 65 air watts -- which as a cordless vacuum -- is pretty impressive) and highly practical (coming with a wall mounted docking station which is great on the storage side of things -- but it also has the ability of being able to convert into just a handheld vacuum cleaner -- very much like that of the Dyson DC34 handheld vacuum).

2. The Eureka Mighty Mite

This particular model is hugely popular amongst compact canister shoppers and there is very good reasoning as to why -- basically 'the value for money aspect', for less than $70 you are getting a pretty solid mini vacuum. Firstly, from the practical aspect it is completely sound -- offering you a 20 ft cord and extension wand which is pretty decent for a small sized room & the cleaner head is designed to be suited to all surface types -- obviously the fact that it is lightweight (less than 9 lbs) makes it easy to carry & store away. Moreover, it is actually surprisingly powerful and should be more than sufficient for most of your cleaning needs. Some of the downsides are that (despite what the listing information may tell you) is that it isn't fitted with a certified HEPA filter and operates on a bag mechanism (hence will come with the running costs of replacing them).

3. The Dirt Devil Dynamite II

This is another hugely popular compact cleaner model (in many ways, it is similar to that of the mighty mite in that it is pretty cheap, compact & powerful -- offering overall good value for money -- just is instead it is an upright) which is basically just a mini sized vacuum cleaner possessing all the same features (e.g. cyclonic technology -- allowing it go bagless etc.), although with regards to practical specifications, they have obviously been somewhat reduced. It also has a constructed HEPA filter as well to prevent allergens and dust from being expelled into the air whilst vacuuming -- hence suitable for asthmatics & allergy sufferers. On a pure 'bang for buck' basis, the Dirt Devil Dynamite definitely gets my vote.

4. The Dyson DC26 Multi-floor (more info)

Included for the sheer fact that it is so 'incredibly' compact (Height: 26.7 x Width: 33 x Depth: 21 cm & weighs just 5.3 kg) as well as being 'very easy' to manoeuvre and operate (and generally speaking, those who are after a normal power functioning vacuum but are really tight on space -- then the DC26 could be a great option for you). Although, its cleaning performance isn't exactly up there with the rest of the Dyson range (if you are after an updated model of the DC26 -- you could consider the recently released DC49 model which is even lighter & smaller yet more powerful than the DC26 --but it is a fair bit more expensive) it still offers more than sufficient power to carry out a decent job (certainly the most powerful out of the lot mentioned so far). Moreover, you are also provided with the standard attachment set from Dyson -- the combination tool (a crevice tool that can be used for vacuuming tight gaps & areas with a brush nozzle to perform powered dusting also) and a stair (upholstery) tool.

5. The Dyson DC50 Animal (more info)

By far the best of the bunch, is one of the very latest models to be released from Dyson (mid-2013) -- the DC50 Animal, which is basically a compact & lightweight upright vacuum cleaner (specifications: H:106.4 x W:28 x D: 35.4 cm & weight: 5.4 kg)  that has been literally stuffed with Dyson's very latest technology (e.g. Two-tier radial root cyclone technology - allowing it to generate high centrifugal forces that increase suck up of dirt and dust - as well as an advanced self-adjusting cleaner head, raising or lowering to varying floor types)  -- which has essentially enabled it to perform the same sort of cleaning standards as that of a standard upright vacuum (if not better in many circumstances). Honestly, you will be surprised at its sucking power. Moreover, it is attached with the highly regarded & specially designed for effective pet hair pick up -- the Dyson tangle-free turbine tool & the rest of the attachments (as mentioned with the DC26).

If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding the list of 'best vacuums for small flats & apartments' (e.g. you have a particular model that you believe deserves to be on the list) or about any of the models specifically (e.g. the DC44's mechanical specifications) then please do not hesitate to make them within the comments section just below and we will be sure to get back to you as soon as possible.
