Birds Control

What is Birds Control?

Birds control refers to the various means of deterrent put in place to repel birds. While usually beautiful and pleasant, birds can in fact become a nuisance when they begin to leave unsanitary and unsightly droppings in yards and gardens where children might be playing. Other people find constant bird noise to be disturbing, especially with bird species that are prone to noisy fighting and grating, shrill calls. If you are trying to maintain a home garden, bird repellents can help you to keep pesky birds from eating the fruits of your labor. Many birds will flock to eat freshly laid grass seed before it can take root, making bird repellents necessary in order to rejuvenate a dying lawn. More serious cases of intolerable bird nuisance include complications to aviation - most major airports have some means of bird repellents in place to prevent flocks of large birds coming into contact with airplanes that are taking off or landing. Dangerous contact between airborne birds and planes, known as bird strike, can and has been deadly. If birds are sucked into jet engines, they have an excellent chance of instantly damaging the engine to the point that it is rendered ineffective in producing sufficient thrust to keep the airplane aloft. For these reasons, birds control is employed throughout the world in various forms to keep birds from causing disturbance and damage to property and other interests.

The Diverse World of Bird Repellent Methods

There are many different forms of bird repellents, as different techniques are more or less effective for different applications and against different bird species.

Bird Netting

One of the most widely used methods of birds control is bird netting. Bird netting looks like the netting of a soccer goal, and can be strategically placed to prevent birds of certain sizes from entering a selected area. Bird netting is mostly effective for medium to large sized birds, but if bird netting is made of low quality materials, poorly crafted, or unprotected against the sun and elements, it will need constant servicing to remain effective. Top of the line bird netting is made from specially coated U.V. resistent fibers to increase its longevity.

Bird Spikes

Another popular method of bird repellents is bird spikes, which are commonly found on the upper ledges of skyscrapers or tucked away into the eaves of tall multi-story parking lots. Bird spikes prevent birds from landing or settling on any surface long enough to build a nest and establish permanent residence. Bird spikes are a favored means of birds control because they are effective without causing harm to birds that attempt to settle there. Most bird spikes are not sharp but simply unwieldly and difficult to navigate, encouraging birds that wish to roost to settle elsewhere. One potential downside to bird spikes is their potentially unsightly appearance.

Electrical Birds Control Systems

Birds control systems designed to use electricity to shock or repel birds are disfavored by some for being inhumane, but the truth is that most electric birds control systems deliver very minor shocks that are not capable of harming birds. Instead, the shocks are intended as conditioning stimuli, which over time discourage local birds from wanting to nest in the vicinity of the electrical birds control system.

I'm a fan of cats but they don't work on bluejays. Bluejays are just too darn mean.
