Black Bow Ties
Choosing A Black Bow Tie
Black Bow Ties
Bow ties are a timeless fashion item, associated with both highly formal events and casual, fun occasions. Due to these different occasions, many different types of bow tie are available to buy today. However a black bow tie is still the most popular option, but there are quite a few things to consider before buying one. This article intends to make you aware of the different options and guide you to a good choice.
The classic colour for a bow tie is black, as it is the most formal tie colour and probably the most common bow tie choice. You only have to look on TV at a formal award ceremony and the chances are that pretty much every man in the room will be wearing a black bow tie. If you occasionally get invited to formal events then it is a really good idea to have a black bow tie in your wardrobe available for those special occasions. However there are also a great many options if you are thinking of buying a black bow tie including the material that the tie is made out of and the way in which the tie is fixed in place. Quite why black has emerged as the colour with the greatest connotations of formality is probably due its very sober colour. However in the case of bow ties, black is actually very visually appealing colour, as its contrasts well with a crisp white dinner jacket shirt.
Materials that you can choose from include satin, silk, velvet and polyester, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. Normally silk, satin and velvet would be considered the most up market materials and therefore best for a formal occasion. Of those three, silk is the material most closely associated as a material in tie production and its wonderfully smooth surface and beautiful appearance make it perfect for a very formal occasion. Polyester on the other hand is not generally as highly regarded as silk as arguably its texture and appearance are not as nice. However on the plus side it is considerably cheaper than silk and more hardwearing, making it a very cost effective option over the long run. Another advantage of polyester is that it is normally machine washable, though you should check the label on the garment itself.
As well as thinking about the material that you want your bow tie to be made of, another consideration is the type of black bow tie that you want. There are three main types of bow ties for men- a self tie bow tie, a clip on bow tie and a pre tied bow tie. A self tied bow tie is perhaps the most traditional and stylish option, though learning to tie one can be difficult. Even if you are confident in your tying abilities, it can still take a while to tie it perfectly, which can be a hassle if you getting ready for a important event. Clip on bow ties are essentially a pre formed bow with a clip that fixes onto the front of your collar. They are very simple put on, but the downside is that they can look a little unconvincing. A good compromise between the two is a pre tied bow tie. They also have a pre formed bow, but use an adjustable band which fixes around your neck to hold it in place. They are quick to put and look pretty convincing, so are a good option for those who don’t want a self tied bow tie.
