Others Names for the Black Panther?

Yes, like any other animal different people call it different things

To start this article off, a black panther is known by a variety of different names and the original name "black panther" was considered politically incorrect, so most of the time now it is referred to as a black leopard or black jaguar. I figured I would mention this to avoid confusion when talking to others, experts, or reading the rest of this article.

Black Panthers AREN'T a Species?

Yes, Just a Genetic Mutation

A black panther is just a jaguar or leopard with Melanism, a genetic mutation the causes the fur to appear to be black but if you take the animal in front of a dark colored background and inspect it thoroughly you can see the natural markings of the normal animal. Melanism is caused by excessive production of Melanin which causes the darkening of body tissue and/or fur.

Where They Live

They tend to live anywhere that has a dense rainforest and the black leopards live over in Africa, Central Asia, India, and China while the black jaguars live in Latin America.

Black Panther Diet

Black panthers eat deer, monkeys, and rodents, while black jaguars hunt for deer, monkeys, reptiles, eggs and fish. Depending on their locations and if it's a jaguar or leopard can change these diets but these are the most observed appetite for them both since they aren't that close together their food selection is different as well.

Gene Dominance Difference in Leopards and Jaguars

Black Jaguar cubs. In jaguars, the mutation is dominant hence black jaguars can produce both black and spotted cubs, but spotted jaguars only produce spotted cubs when bred together. In leopards, the mutation is recessive and some spotted leopards can produce black cubs while black leopards always breed true when mated together.
