When the snow begins to fall and you are a pedestrian who walks every where then you need to take some extra precautions. When people travel by car it is recommended to always carry water with you. As a pedestrian you need to ALWAYS have access to water. You may carry a bottle of water, a CamelBak style hydration pack, or the gas station method.
The Gas Station method is simply always having access to a store that is open in order to rehydrate your body. If you walk in a town and you are always near a 24 hour convenience store then you will be covered in case you need to hydrate.
Obviously in summer time during the long dry heat spells we need to keep hydrated but in winter time we need to hydrate also. If you get thirsty and do not have access to water many people think they can just eat snow and it will quench their thirst but that is false.
If snow is the only water source you have available you must first melt it down and then you can drink it. Eating snow will cause you to be thirstier, cool down your bodies core temperature, and expose you to possible contaminants that could make you sick and in extreme cases death.
Coffee is a popular drink in the winter time but it actually works to dehydrate your body. If you drink coffee just have 1-2 cups and don't go overboard.
Hot Chocolate is another winter time drink that is popular. This drink is usually loaded with sugars and as with coffee just drink a cup or two. If you own a 52 ounce mug and fill it with hot chocolate and then drink it like a frat boy drinking beer thru a beer bong then you will get sick.
Energy drinks such as Rockstar and Amp are good to drink once a day or so if you like them. Soda Pops are also better to drink then nothing in many situations but the best hydration for your body comes from pure drinking water.
Plain tap water is a wonderful gift given to us by the heavens. Studies have proven that by drastically increasing the amount of water you drink can lead to a healthier body and mind which will not only extend your life but also the quality of it.
