Boiler Operator Jobs
Although boiler operators are well paid their jobs can be rather dangerous. Boiler operators are shift workers and as boilers never stop working, they tend to work weekends and holidays. Fortunately, their shifts are usually only 8 hours long. Boilers operators may only work in 8 hour shifts, but they have to constantly pay attention and monitor the equipment.
Boiler operator jobs are sometimes dangerous. Some of the things they need to consider is the risk of explosions, steam burns and injuries from chemicals as well as exposure to carbon monoxide. On the plus side, the job is stable and there is always work to be done as boilers are in constant need of maintenance. If you enjoy working with your hands, repairing things and making them work in addition to working largely independently, then a boiler operator job might be the one that you have been looking for this whole time.
If you are more ambitious, you could aspire to being a boiler engineer. These guys make sure the whole plant works and oversees the people that work under them. They also make sure that their people are all trained. If you would like to be more specialized then a job doing boiler installation may be most suitable.
There three categories or classifications of boiler engineer. As your classification changes, so does the level of steam generation which you will be responsible for. The highest level you can obtain is first class.
To be a boiler engineer, you need to work as an operator for at least two years. To be a boiler operator you need to have gone through at least high school education, although in more recent times, as boilers have become more complicated, some college courses might be good too. After your education, you will receive training and will work as an apprentice under a boiler operator who is more experienced. Some of these apprenticeships are formal and your union may even pay for the formal training courses that might be required. After you complete all this, you can apply for a license. Once you got this, you can seek out employment as a boiler operator and begin your exciting career.
