Jacques Attali: A brief history of the future

Book review

[3073]Jacques Attali draws in his book "A Brief History of the Future" the balance of the world in the next 100 years. I propose to summarize the book. The first part is called "A very long history", and aims to prove that the invariants of the history of man are sacred, war and money. From these three concepts and much later in the book, Jacques Attali will try to prove why there will be the next hundred years three phases in the history of man. As Jacques Attali believes that the American empire will collapse around the year 2035, he assumes that the phase following the end of America is a phase of super-empire where money and private organizations will capture everything that falls within the state. Thus, justice, army, police will become in the hands of private and the nation state in its most fundamental will collapse. This phase of super-empire will lead to another phase: hyperconflict. According to Jacques Attali, before there is established a great democracy in the world, man will go through bloody conflicts that will lead all of humanity to its loss because it was only around 2060 that Humanity will know democracy as it has been known at the beginning of the century. To prove his argument, Jacques Attali finds his way to first primates and early civilizations that always know only three invariant: the holy war and money.

In this second part of the book, Jacques Attali trying to prove that capitalism does not come from thinkers who have formulated their doctrine by themselves but a natural business model that has inherited the past three millennia. The Judeo-Greek ideal as he calls himself was born thanks to Phoenician traders, Hebrew, Greek around 700 BC who wanted to make money their freedom. By buying and selling, participating in fairs, they have gradually transformed the face of a world that had only two prerogatives: the sacred and the military. Thus, the money would come in addition to these two currencies in the world of antiquity. Its uniqueness is that it can make some peoples go out of the shadows by making them as powerful as kings or priests who rule human society. Thus  the market economy was born and the market order. You do not need to be a king to live well, just to have money can afford you to be a king. During the Middle Ages, the intensification of trade flows have allowed the emergence of a city, capital of the market order. This town is Bruges. For over six centuries, capitalism will be exercised in several capital cities of the market order. Fernand Braudel have explained this phenomenon long before Jacques Attali. The capital of the market order is treated as a heart and the world at a periphery which benefits from near or far from the activity of the heart. Throughout history, there has been a successive manner Bruges and Venice, Antwerp, Genoa, Amsterdam, London, Boston, New York and Los Angeles. As soon as a heart dies, another takes over and puts her within reach of consumers of other products incorporating new technologies to bring more and more humans in their quest for happiness.

In the third part of his book "A Brief History of the Future", Jacques Attali describes what will the world by in the end of the American empire. The author states that America will cease to dominate the world in 2035. Meanwhile, Los Angeles will remain the capital of the market order leading up to 2035 incredible advances in products related to new technologies. In 2035, in a world where 1 billion people are migrants, everyone but the poor will have an internet connection. The paper will disappear: the books and newspapers will be in electronic form. Men use more Internet for entertainment. The distraction of men, in future years, will become a focus of increasingly important for large firms as more and more people seek to be entertained. Distraction and recreation will become key sectors of the economy as clothing or food. On the political front, eleven powers will be added to the eight most developed countries in the world. These countries are: "Japan, China, India, Russia, Indonesia, Korea, Australia, Canada, South Africa and Mexico. Economically, Asia will dominate and the Pacific Ocean will become the ocean of all the trades.

In the fourth part of his book "A Brief History of the Future", Jacques Attali will set out the broad outlines of the future in the years 2035-2050. The tenth form of the market order can be created only if it comes to creating mobile devices for the hypersurveillance. In the years 2035-2050, the secret for himself, cachoterie, privacy will be things past. Everyone will know everything about everyone because it will be increasingly difficult to hide things. In 2050 there will be devices to monitor people and equipment to repair. Jacques Attali calls them autoréparateurs. People's health will become a crucial point for them. To lengthen life expectancy, there will also be devices to monitor oneself and repair oneself. In 2050, Jacques Attali tells us that the state will no longer exist. The world will be a super-empire and the human an artifact. If ever man manages to transcend death by cloning to infinity, humans will become an artifact, a commodity we sells and we buy. Thus, we can make clones of the desired beings, loved ones, the lost ones. Jacques Attali says in his book that the world will be polycentric and that there will be several capitals in the market order and also that State this institution that was born more than five millenniums ago will die leaving behind her the world empire, the borderless world where man is now a supporter of nomadism hypernomade or sometimes a reluctant infranomade and in opposition to the world of hypersurveillance.

In the fifth and final part of his book "A Brief History of the Future", Jacques Attali explains how super-empire will disintegrate to leave behind him an ideal world without war, utopia where man no longer fear his neighbor and where altruism become the universal currency. According to Jacques Attali, the world will only be possible once again after many blood effusions.  These wars as they are, are described in Part V of the book. Jacques Attali explains in his book that the conflicts that we see  today are ticking bombs that will eventually explode after the 2050s. China is likely to blame Taiwan, the good relations that have existed since 1990 between Russia and the West are likely to be deteriorated and Islam will continue to create problems in the world until 2050. According to Jacques Attali, the years 2050-2060 are the years where religion will recognize a regain. Both religions proselytes: Christianity and Islam will race  to get fans but disputes they have with one another will not yet be resolved which will cause a global war that may well destroy all mankind. The foundations for a world of fairness, happiness, prosperity, freedom, equality, altruism where the enemy in the world no longer exists can not be installed until this hyperconflict rules accounts to a history where happened so much inequality, injustice, wars, hatred, violence, hunger, poverty and too little freedom.
