Breakfast Nook Seating Options

When you think about your options for seating around a dining table, you might think that you have to choose between chairs with arms and chair without arms. However, the truth is that in the breakfast nook, your choices are a bit more varied. For whatever reason, the kitchen or breakfast nook are an informal enough space that it is acceptable to use other types of seating. You can use chairs, benches, booths, or a combination on these.

Chairs are probably still the most common form of seating, but the chairs in the breakfast nook have some properties that you might not see in a formal dining room. Most breakfast nooks have many windows and lots of light so the furniture is typically lightweight and light in color. It is common for the chairs to have open backs and think legs rather than cushioned backs and heavy legs and stands. You are also more likely to see removable seat cushions in the breakfast nook. Dining chairs are usually upholstered, but the breakfast nook is an area where you can change the seat cushions and wash them when you need to. In general, the breakfast nook seating will be less formal than the chairs in the dining room.

The breakfast nook table is a place where your entire family will gather as well as guests and friends. You want to make sure that you can accommodate as many people as possible. One way to help with this issue is to use bench seating. Typically, you can fit one and a half people in the space taken up by a single chair if you use benches or booths. That means that a rectangular table with six chairs could seat eight to ten people if you used benches. If you do decide to go with bench seating then there are several styles to choose from. You can have benches that are simply a seat with no back and no storage underneath. This is the simplest type of bench seat and is best used for small tables or small sections. Your bench can also have a back. The back makes the seating a bit more comfortable because you can relax as if you were in a chair. The backs of breakfast nook benches are usually decorated in some way. For example, you can have inlaid tiles, decorative cuttings, or painted pictures on the backs. Some breakfast nook bench seating has storage underneath the seats. You lift up the seat to find a storage area that you can use for kitchen linens, table linens, small appliances, or anything you might need to store nearby.
