Breast reduction liposuction is not only one of the oldest types of liposuction, but also one of the most popular in women. Contrary to popular belief, cosmetic surgery on the breast is not limited to enlargement alone; in fact a lot of women go to their doctors because they want their breast size to go down a cup or two.

Just like breast enlargement, there are different methods and techniques involved in breast reduction with liposuction. Out of the many methods available, the two mostly used are the surgical-excision technique and the tumescent liposuction technique.

The surgical-excision liposuction technique is the typical and most widely used method for breast reduction. With this technique, the breast is cut using a scalpel so that breast tissue can be removed. Although it is a common procedure, it has a lot of risks and complications. Many patients reported unevenness in breast sizes, large scars, keloids and skin discoloration near the nipple. Other complications include nipple damage and loss of sensation in the nipples. This method also poses risks like blood clots, bleeding, fluid collection, fat necrosis and scarring of the tissues in the breast. Because the method requires general anesthesia, the recovery phase is often marked with pain and slow recovery.

Tumescent liposuction surgery to reduce the size of the breasts has become quite popular because it solves the problem of saggy breasts after the surgery. Since most of the breast tissue is removed, the appearance of the breast after surgery can be quite wrinkled because of excess skin. Tumescent liposuction, however, also lifts the breasts and makes them tighter. With this technique, breast size is lessened in proportion to the amount of fat removed in the breasts.

This procedure is done using local anesthesia only, which is why it can lift breasts aside from reducing its size. The surgeon uses micro-cannulas so that there is less pain afterwards and the patient can recover faster. This is also why there is minimal scarring on the patient and she can go about her normal daily activities within days. The procedure can reduce a woman's breast mass by almost 50 percent. After the procedure, the body reacts with the reduced weight in the breast area by adapting to the new shape and size of the breast. Because skin around the breast is elastic, it elevates and contracts around the reduced tissue, thereby giving it a natural lift. Even after the surgery, the breast retains its new, elevated shape and gradually looks the way it did before surgery, only smaller.
