Breast Reduction Surgery

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

There are many reasons why a patient receives plastic surgery treatment. Some procedures are elective but cosmetic while others are functional and may or may not be elective. Breast reduction can be either elective or medical and it has cosmetic as well as functional purposes. With professional consultation it is up to the individual to determine what the best treatment for them is.

There is a distinction between breast reduction, known as mammoplasty, and breast reconstruction or mastectomy. Both involve the same technique of tissue removal so they are often prices the same. A mastectomy is often for patients who have had breast cancer and require tissue removal. Mammoplasty is an elective procedure to reduce the breast for any number of reasons.

The most common reason a patient would request mammoplasty is to relieve back pains caused the excessively large breasts. It can also be something more abstract such as self esteem issues caused by abnormally large breasts. The procedure is also used to fix sagging caused by the effects of gravity on the heaviness.

It is not a procedure for anyone who plans on having a family or becoming pregnant in the future. Most surgeons will recommend waiting until your final pregnancy because of the unpredictable effects a pregnancy could cause. The changes caused by the surgery would also make breast feeding very difficult or near impossible.

The risks involved include the same risks shared by most plastic surgery procedures in addition to those specific to breast enhancement surgery. General surgery risks include anesthesia risks, bleeding, and infection to the incision area. Some patients experience side effects such as loss of sensitivity, scarring, and sometimes asymmetrical size, shape, or contour in the breasts.

It is not uncommon for patients to require an adjustment period to become acquainted with their new size especially if there is a big difference. Consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine what type of procedure and how much is right for you.
