The Modern British Invasion


Some of today’s greatest music came from the U.K. Bands as well as solo artists have left the streets of London and have come to America. Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Beatles and The Who. Solo artists include Danny Williams and Donovan. These artist played rock music with roots from the blues. But today, there is another wave of artists coming from the U.K. They have brought a new type of style and a genuine message to their music. Read this article to learn more about the 2012 British Invasion!

 The Script

We start out with The Script, an Irish rock band originated in Dublin. In 2008, they released their self-titled debut album featuring many songs like “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”, “Breakeven”, and “Anybody There”. Their second album, Science & Faith, was released in 2012. This album featured songs like “For The First Time” and “Nothing.” This album made it all the way to the US, and made debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200. This 3-man band plans to make release their third album, #3, in late 2012.


We now move to Coldplay, a British rock band formed in 1996 by Chris Martin, the lead vocalist. They later decided to call themselves Coldplay, in 1998. Coldplay gained fame in the US in 2000, with their single “Yellow.” In 2005, they released another album, X&Y, featuring songs like “Fix You” and “The Hardest Part”. Their 4th studio album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, more commonly known as Viva la Vida, was released in 2008. Their 5th album, Mylo Xyloto, was released in 2011 features many songs like “Paradise”, “Every Teardrop is A Waterfall” “Princess of China” and “Charlie Brown”. It sold over 208,000 copies in the US within the first week and debuted at number one of the US Billboard 200.


Next, we shuffle over to Adele. At only 23, Adele has received world recognition. She released her first album titled 19, in 2008, receiving double platinum in the US. Her second album entitled 21 was released in early 2011, which boosted her fame in the US. 21 features many songs like “Rolling in the Deep”, “Set Fire to the Rain”, and “Turning Tables.” She is known as one of the most influential people in the music world, with a pure voice and an original style of music.

 Jessie J

Jessie J, born Jessica Cornish, is another English singer songwriter. In 2011, she released the song “Price Tag” which not only topped the charts in the UK and US, but another 17 different countries. After this, she released her debut album Who You Are, featuring songs like “Who You Are” and “Nobody’s Perfect”. Jessie J also wrote songs like “Party in the USA” for Miley Cyrus, and another song for Chris Brown. Her single “Domino” reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

 One Direction

Now, every teenage girl must know who One Direction is. These 5 clean-cut teens have taken over the female population ranging in ages of 12-19 in the US. They are a British-Irish Boy Band who came off the X-Factor in third place and later released their first single, “What Makes You Beautiful” in 2011. In March of 2012, their debut album Up All Night released in America and topped the charts. This album includes other songs like “Gotta Be You” and “One Thing”.

The Wanted

The Wanted, very similar to One Direction, is another British-Irish Boy Band formed back in 2009. They released their first self-titled album in 2010; however, they gained fame in the US in the beginning of 2012. Their single “Glad You Came hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The Wanted also has another single, “Chasing the Sun” which has become another highly requested song in the US.

 Cher Lloyd

Cher Lloyd is another rising star in the US. She finished in fourth place in the X-Factor, right behind One Direction, runner up Rebecca Ferguson, and winner Matt Cardle. What made Cher unique was that she not only sang, but performed dubstep, R&B, and rap. Due to the mega popularity she received on X-Factor, Simon Cowell signed Cher with Sony Music. Her debut single “Swagger Jagger” was released in 2011. Later in the year, her first album, Sticks + Stones was released in the UK. It will be released in the US in late 2012 early 2013. Another single recently released in the US is called “Want You Back.” This song has topped many Billboard Charts and is one of the most requested songs in the US.

 Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is an English singer, songwriter and producer. From a young age, he picked up the guitar and began writing his own music. He can also beat box. In 2011, he was signed with Asylum/Atlantic Records. Ed became very popular in America with his debut single “The A Team”. In 2012, he won 2 Brit Awards for the Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough. Ed’s album + was also released in America in June of 2012.

 Florence + the Machine

Florence and the Machine is an indie rock and soul band with lead singer Florence Welch. In 2009, they released their first album in the UK. It was entitled Lungs and featured songs like “Cosmic Love” and “The Dog Days Are Over”. 2 years later, in 2011, they released their second studio album entitled Ceremonials, which debuted at number 6 in the US. This album featured songs like “Shake it Out” and “No Light, No Light”.

 Ellie Goulding

Elena Jane Goulding, more commonly known as Ellie Goulding, is an English singer songwriter who rose to fame in 2010. Her genre of music includes Indie pop and electropop. She learned to play the guitar at the age of 14 and began singing and writing from then onwards. She released a debut album entitled Lights, which sold over 850,000 copies in the UK. The song “Lights” was released in the US in early March of 2011 and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
