Having a vacation need not be very expensive. One can relax and enjoy their free time at Chicago even on a tight budget. For tourists from other countries or states, several travel agencies and airlines offer Chicago vacation packages that cover not only the airline fees and accommodation but also provide discount cards or coupons to Chicago's world-class tourist attractions. Some Chicago vacation packages even offer a Go Chicago Card that gives access to more that 30 of Chicago's top tourist destinations. The card is often sold at a discounted price to attract more tourists. One of the main advantages of the card is that it is cost-saving instead of paying entrance fees and tickets to every tourist attraction. Aside from the cost-savings, the card also gives the holder VIP entry to some of the attractions and discounts to some of the best restaurants and shopping stores.

Aside from these offers, one should also know the best time to have a Chicago vacation. Chicago's weather is considered as humid continental bringing continuous rainfall and humid summers. Though Chicago's peak season is summer when a lot of festivities, exhibits, and celebrations are held, it is also the season when hotel rates are up and tourist attractions are packed. Chicago family vacation packages are at a low during winter. For tourists who want to experience the chilly experience of continuous snow, the months of December to March are the best in Chicago. Though not too many people come to Chicago during these months, it is also the reason for one to take advantage of the low Chicago vacation packages.

When touring within the city, most tourist attractions can be visited by foot. If one has the extra budget to rent a car, the hotel and car rental services can provide that. However, if one is on a tight budget and cannot afford to pay the parking fees and cab fares, one can opt to take the El. The elevated train is the fastest and cheapest way to travel around the metro. If one is planning to stay for week, the El has week-long passes at a discounted rate.

What other way to end a vacation but to go shopping. Though some shopping centers offer discounts or coupons to those who have a Chicago vacation package, their merchandise are still relatively expensive as compared to independent boutiques and shops some of which can be found in the Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview. These shops offer good finds fit for one who's on a budget.
