Designing Multilingual Websites

The instant a web page gets uploaded onto the internet, it gets global. Anyone can access the website from around the world. English is considered to be an international language. If you choose to keep English as the only language for your website construction, you will earn a huge number of viewers globally.

The case might differ if you reside in a country where nationals are not that fluent with English. Or you wish to develop a successfully profitable global following of your webpage, then you must develop your website in multi-lingual style.

Not everyone around the world feels comfortable with English. Plus the nature of information that is to be presented on the website makes a lot of difference in deciding whether the site should be multilingual or if English language can be sufficient. For instance, the websites with content relevant to pharmaceuticals, websites concerning educational information or even those websites that are developed for the narration of literature can be useful.

Many of your website visitors would prefer the content to be in their own language, so that they can thoroughly understand the information that is presented on the web pages. Wikipedia.com is a multilingual website. The purpose of which is to provide knowledgeable content to many people that wish to study the facts in their own language be it Chinese, Arabic, Dutch or French.

However it is imperative to keep a few basic things in mind when designing a multilingual website.

1. You must choose Unicode for the development of your web pages. This is because Unicode is a type of numeric presentation of characters that is two bytes and can contain up to 65535 characters to display.
2. If you wish to develop your web page in Unicode format, you must make use of a tool that will assist you in typing of your language. Most of the development prefers Microsoft Front page. FrontPage is a very useful tool for designing web pages and you can effortlessly choose the language of your web through this software, especially if it is installed on Microsoft XP.
3. Pay attention to the entrance page. This means that if you are designing a multilingual website, you are preferably required to design a webpage that provides the option of choosing from different languages for your visitors. The entrance page should be quite graphically designed to catch interest of the visitors.
4. One of the major issues faced by multilingual website designers is the consideration of SEO. There are many search engines that do not support the listings of multilingual websites. Google, however, works in a friendly manner and majorly supports the indexing of multilingual web pages.
5. When you decide to create your website in a language other than English, you will not be offered many choices in font selection. Choose from the fonts that are easier to read for your visitors.

Be sure never to use Unicode characters when deciding the name of the website. Just use English names for the websites.
